Warren Buffet is worth $116 billion.

Nick Saban has won 7 national titles.

Both live by the “Inner Scorecard.”

Here’s what it is + how you can use it:
There are 2 ways to measure success:

• Outer Scorecard
• Inner Scorecard

Most people use one.

The best use the other.

Let’s break them down.
The Outer Scorecard

This is how most measure success.

• Fame
• Money
• Status
• Influence
• Accolades
• Recognition
• Achievement

It’s based on extrinsic motivation.
The Outer Scorecard is fickle.

It’s defined by what the world thinks.

The problem is it’s outcome-focused.

Outcomes are mostly out of your control.

Playing by this scorecard is a fool’s game.
The Inner Scorecard

This is how the best measure success.

• Effort
• Values
• Principles
• Standards
• Excellence
• Commitment
• Performance

It’s based on intrinsic motivation.
The Inner Scorecard is reliable.

It’s defined only by what you think.

It’s beauty is it is process-focused.

The process is all within your control.

The best play by this scorecard.
The Inner Scorecard has simple principles:

• Live in the present
• Focus on the process
• Ignore all external voices
• Perform to your standard
• Forget about the outcome

Nothing else matters.
The Inner Scorecard concept is usually credited to Warren Buffett.

Buffett’s dad taught it to him, and the billionaire has lived his life by it.
The Inner Scorecard is now popular in sports and business.

@AlabamaFTBL coach Nick Saban is the best college football coach of all time.

He runs his program by it.

(He calls it “scoreboard.” Same thing).
@AlabamaFTBL So we know what the Inner Scorecard is.

They key question now:

How do you develop one for your life?

It’s highly individual.

Much more art than science.

But these 3 questions will guide you:
@AlabamaFTBL • What are my core values?

Your values drive your behavior.

Your behavior drives the Inner Scorecard.

Examples of values:

• Courage
• Integrity
• Service
• Ownership

Your values can be almost anything.

Clarifying them is a good first step.
@AlabamaFTBL • What is my personal standard?

We all need to decide.

Are we good with “good enough?”

Or do we want to maximize our potential?

Your standards guide your Inner Scorecard.
@AlabamaFTBL • How good do I want to be?

Good.

Great.

Your best.

Which one is it?

How you answer will influence your scorecard.
@AlabamaFTBL Let’s say you sell cars.

Outer Scorecard example:

• Make $350,000 this year
• Win top salesperson award
• Get promoted

Inner Scorecard example:

• Improve sales skills every day
• Obsess over every customer
• Make each sales call great
@AlabamaFTBL Let’s say you’re a startup CEO.

Outer Scorecard example:

• Raise $50 million
• Be on Forbes 40 under 40
• Win “best new startup” award

Inner Scorecard example:

• Make your pitch amazing
• Build a fantastic business
• Relentlessly execute every day
@AlabamaFTBL Key Takeaways

• 2 ways to measure success
• The Inner Scorecard is intrinsic
• The Outer Scorecard is extrinsic
• The best live by an Inner Scorecard

How you measure success will largely determine how successful you’ll be.

Every goal you have is attainable.

If you become relentlessly consistent.

Here’s how (it’s easier than you think):
I’ve been a:

• D1 athlete
• business owner
• startup operator
• ultramarathon runner

They all required consistency.

All of your goals will, too.

These 5 simple strategies will help:
• Fully commit

Consistency requires full commitment.

So, what is commitment?

Complete dedication.

Not partial.
Not sometimes.
Not when you “feel like it.”

Complete.

Most people are paralyzed by fear.

If you read this, you won't be:
Fear is a fact of life.

We all face it and will again.

But it doesn’t have to consume us.

There are ways to shift our mindset.

There are ways to use fear as fuel.

Let’s unpack a few:
• Every successful person feels fear

Start by realizing everyone faces fear.

It may seem like some are “fearless.”

They’ve just learned to move through it.

No successful person is immune from fear.

And nothing great is possible without it.

Remember this.

11 hard questions that will improve your life:
• What trophy do I want on my mantle?

The world defines success in many ways.

What matters is how *you* define it.

So many people spend life chasing someone else’s definition.

Every day, you’re putting a “trophy” on your mantle.

Make sure it’s one that you actually want.
• What’s it like to know me?

It’s easy to see others objectively.

It’s hard to see ourselves that way.

But we profoundly impact people.

Friends, colleagues, family, teammates.

What’s their experience of you?

Make their lives better, not worse.

Everyone wants better daily habits.

Most have no idea where to start.

Start here:
I’ve built dozens of habits over 15+ years.

There’s one that’s had the greatest ROI.

My “3 Pillars of Wellness.”

It’s simple + repeatable.

Here’s how it works:
Every day, I do 3 things:

• something to nourish my mind
• something to nourish my body
• something to nourish my soul

This is what I need to be healthy, productive and at my best.

Let’s break them down.

Mondays set the tone.

7 powerful ways to win your week:
1. Change your mindset

Low-performers hate Mondays.

High-performers embrace them.

Stop complaining about Monday.

Start seeing them for what they are.

Fresh starts full of new opportunities.

Now, go get ‘em.
2. Set your “OBG”

Lists of priorities can be overwhelming.

Instead, set One Big Goal.

Your OBG defines the week.

If you could accomplish only one thing this week, what would it be?

That’s your OBG.

Identify it and schedule around it.

The right questions can change your life.

Here’s how you ask better ones:
Good questions unlock so much.

• More knowledge
• Deeper insights
• Richer relationships
• Better opportunities

And that’s just a few. The problem?

Most people don't ask good questions.

Let’s fix this.
Enter John Sawatsky.

He’s a world-class journalist and an expert on interviewing.

For 2+ decades, he’s trained journalists on how to ask questions.

When I worked at ESPN, I attended one of John’s trainings.

He has 3 rules for great questions.
