I’ve trained with:

• Navy SEALs
• Elite athletes
• Serial entrepreneurs

One thing they had in common?

Unbeatable minds.

Here are 9 powerful mindset lessons I learned from them (that you can use, too):
1. Don’t fight the cold

In SEAL training, there’s something called “surf torture.”

It’s what it sounds like.

Lie in shallow water and let the surf wash over you.

This is done at night, and it’s freezing.

You stay in the water until they say stop.

You have two options.
You can fight the cold.

Or you can accept it.

Fighting the cold takes tons of energy.

Accepting it frees all that energy up.

Surf torture is like any problem in life.

The more we fight it, the more it takes from us.

The sooner we accept it, the sooner we overcome it.
2. Choices > feelings

We make too many decisions by how we feel.

• Do I feel like making calls?
• Do I feel like working out?
• Do I feel like studying?

Elite performers prioritize choices over feelings.

They do what they choose to do.

Not what they "feel" like doing.
3. Be willing to be humbled

I met a SEAL sniper once.

I'll never forget his perspective on failure:

“The greatest gift you can give me is to humble me.

“Failure is humbling.

“Your willingness to be humbled determines how great you become.

"So, how willing are you?"
4. Remember tomorrow

I did a 36-hour endurance event.

The goal: hike the equivalent of Mt. Everest.

On the mountain, @JesseItzler shared a lesson.

Amidst struggle, remember how you’ll feel tomorrow.

Accomplished.
Successful.
Proud.

Remember tomorrow during today's battles.
@JesseItzler 5. Live by an Inner Scorecard

There are 2 ways to measure success:

• Outer Scorecard
• Inner Scorecard

The best live by the latter.

They measure success by things like:

• Values
• Principles
• Standards
• Excellence

Develop your Inner Scorecard
6. Full benefit

Navy SEALs have a saying.

When something sucks: "Full benefit."

Instant mindset shift.

• Hiking in pouring rain? Full benefit.
• Lose draft of a project? Full benefit.
• Driving + car breaks down? Full benefit.

Adversity makes us better if we let it.
7. Be deliberate with your words

Your tongue is your rudder.

Most don’t realize this power.

They say things like:

• I’m tired
• This is hard
• I don’t want to
• It’s so hot outside
• I struggle with that

What you say dictates what you see.

Choose your words wisely.
8. Break the mountain down

How do you climb a mountain?

Hike to the next rock.

Every elite performer I know applies this in some form.

They run one mile.
They make one sale.
They write one page.
They give one lecture.

The big picture leads to overwhelm.

Focus on right now.
9. Take quitting off the table

Quitting complicates things.

It lurks in the back of your mind.

When times get hard, it taunts you.

You spend endless energy negotiating with yourself.

The best remove this option completely.

They commit to constant forward motion.

Every top performer does one thing well:

They’re remarkably consistent.

3 reasons most people aren't consistent (and how to overcome each):
1. They don't commit

Consistency requires full commitment.

Commitment starts with mindset.

Every time you say things like:

• I’m not that consistent
• I wish I was consistent
• Being consistent is hard

You reinforce a lack of consistency.

Instead, try this:
Say simple things like:

• I am consistent
• I show up every day
• I love the daily process
• I’ll be here again tomorrow

Subtle reframes shift your mindset.

If you want to commit, consider what you say.

Most 1-on-1s should be an email.

7 simple tips to make yours worth the time:
1-on-1s are a staple of work life.

At their best, they’re highly valuable.

At their worst, they:

• Lack focus
• Lack intention
• Become long-winded status updates

I’ve had many good ones (and bad ones).

Here are 7 tips to help make yours better:
1. Consider the time

1-on-1s can be high-ROI time.

But only if you’re ready to engage.

Don’t cram them between 7 other meetings.

Pick a time when it’s easier to be present.

I like mornings. Others prefer later afternoon.

Find what works best for you.

All top performers do one thing well:

They overcome adversity.

How do you crush challenges?

Here’s how from a Navy SEAL:
• Iraq, 2007

Jason Redman and his SEAL team are ambushed.

His left arm is nearly sheared in half.

Half of his face is shot off.

It took 40 reconstructive surgeries to repair him.

The experience left him with a question:

How do you overcome adversity like this?
This is what Jason calls a “life ambush.”

A catastrophic event that alters your reality.

Everyone will have them in life.

There are 3 ways to respond:

(1) be destroyed by it

(2) survive but struggle

(3) overcome + excel

The third group is rare.

So, how do they do it?

Your morning begins the night before.

This 3-minute evening routine will guarantee a productive day:
We’re all busy.

Work, kids, friends, family, hobbies.

We rarely have time for complex routines.

In this thread, you’ll learn a 3-step evening routine that takes 3 minutes.

Here we go:
1. Plan your OBG

Most of us set daily to-do lists.

Or we write down priorities for the day.

But to-do lists are graveyards for your time, and lists of priorities can be overwhelming.

Instead, set an OBG.

Your One Big Goal.

Here’s how they work:

Study the top 1% in any field.

They all share one thing:

An elite mindset.

3 powerful mindsets that drive the best in the world (and how you can apply them):
1. Details drive excellence

Anders Ericsson was a renowned psychologist.

He popularized the idea of “deliberate practice.”

It has two components:

• focused effort on a specific skill
• immediate feedback

Elite performers practice deliberately.

So, what does that mean?
Examples of deliberate practice:

• A quarterback throwing one route 100 times
• A manager role playing one conversation
• A performer rehearsing one scene
• A salesperson repping one pitch
• A chef preparing one recipe

The power is in the relentless focus.
