i expect part of why i encounter so much confusion about this is because of the persistent effect of the dynamics ben is describing in the original post
avoiding both scapegoating and responsibility involves distorting ones understanding of the mind-body
ben gets at how you can't really think through self-deception strategies. responding to good incentives involves some internal assesment of "how bad is bad thing" and "how good is good thing?" which would require attending to things ur avoiding
i'm reminded of something @jessi_cata said once about how shame is effectively "infinite" (even though it's not) because trying to quantify it would be shameful and is not done
(not done at least as long as your in the mode of operating via shame)

Missing some Tweet in this thread? You can try to
force a refresh
been meaning to write blog post refatoring the idea of Double Binds into a more general form, and i haven't written it in 7 months so i'm just gonna tweet it out
double binds are a concept that's pretty central to how i think about power dynamics and how people control others by creating pressures for them to disintegrate and compartmentalize themselves
the closest thing to a primer on the concept is Gregory Batesons og paper on it, but/
/its kinda confusing to just drop as a reference to explain the idea
like, the papers called "Toward a Theory of Schizophrenia". the schizophrenia thing is very relevant to the whole idea, but can distract if this is new to you
gonna try to tweet out the current draft of the mini book I'm writing
working title
"Taste vs Tests: How we learned to let others define what matters"
I finished undergrad at a fancy STEM school this past May. I switched my major 3.5 times in 4 years, going from mechanical engineering, to electrical computer engineering, to a self defined major, to philosophy
this story's about not knowing what you want; my domain of expertise
I was obsessed with this quote at the end of highschool
Of Course! No decisions matter unless you Know What You Want!
i reflected endlessly on what I wanted, how to best craft my goals, and making sure I was always acting of my own volition, never just "going with the flow"
guys, it's coming together! ideas on consciousness that were kicked off by Jaynes and GWT if any of this parses for you, plz gimme a spotcheck/your commentary
WM = working memory
GNW = global neuronal workplace
PhLoop = phonological loop
PP = predictive processing. I conceptualize the "hierarchical levels" as these doubles stranded chains, for percepts to "go up" and predictions to "go down"
