Today's kids will be expected to think for themselves, pose & solve complex problems & produce knowledge rather than reproduce it. Teachers will move from just transmitting information to helping kids build wisdom
What is hierarchy of wisdom?
- Data: Available as facts
- Info: Partitioning data into categories (who, what, when, where)
- Knowledge: Organising info (connecting diff pieces of info to understand)
- Wisdom: Applying knowledge in diff situations (why do something, what is best)
Sage on stage: Transmittal model
In this model kids are expected to reproduce information. Kids are passive learners and their brains are considered to be like empty containers. Teacher has the knowledge and transmits that knowledge to kids
Guide on side: Constructivist model
Knowledge doesn't come packaged in books to be transmitted intact from one to another. Knowledge is a state of understanding & must be constructed or reconstructed by each kid making sense of new info in terms of what the kid already knows
Active teaching: Kids as sculptors
In this model, kids combine new info with prior knowledge & experience to build new knowledge structures (wisdom). The teacher's role is to facilitate kids' interactions with the material & with each other in the knowledge producing endeavour
