Email I got last week:

"Dear Emily,

Can you help us, we have a wondering. We want to know how the earth was born. Did it come out of its Mummy's tummy?

We have looked at space books and couldn't find the answer. I hope you can.

From,
The children at Charles Conder Preschool"
They sent a photo. In case you can't read it:

The Earth wasn't born -Jack
The other Earth in space -Rose
I think that Mrs. Norris is the Mum - Malakai
Maybe it came out of its Daddy's tummy -Laylani
Alpha Centauri -Alex
America -Ruby
The Sun -Luke
I think it was science -Emily
I wrote back: I would tell the children that the Earth was born from stars. Stars that got big, grew old, and stopped shining -- in fact, they exploded in huge BOOMs. Dust flew everywhere.
Dust sounds small, and it is. But when a star explodes, it makes more dust than you can imagine. Sometimes, dust from exploded stars can come together again to make new stars.
Our Sun is a star, did you know that? And when our star was born, its planets were born at the same time. Earth is one of those planets.

Do you know what that means? You are made of stardust.
There's a picture book about all this that I recommend -- it talks both about where children come from and where everything comes from. It's called You Are Stardust, by Elin Kelsey, illustrated by Soyeon Kim..

The teacher responded: "The information you provided for us was wonderful. It helped to consolidate the [video] we watched of the earth being born. ...This was a wonderful way for them to become researchers as they found the answer to their question by connecting to experts."
(This is an Australian preschool, by the way. I asked for and received permission to post the photo and other information here.)
This is lovely. The teacher modeled research really well for these babies. They had a question, they looked in books, they discussed it, they looked for more resources, they still didn't quite get it, they asked an expert, I could help them find the right kind of book for them.
