The @EUauditors released an excellent report this morning about the follies of high speed rail (or at least how it's done badly in Europe) - they have a thread about their findings here:

Crux of it is that lines are very often over budget, have excessive hopes for passenger numbers, trains don't run at the top speed on the lines, and planning for them is all national. It's a pretty grim picture.

But for anyone who's ever thought about it, not surprising.

I've known since last week that this report was due. The @EUauditors press people - knowing I write about transport - sent me an email, alerting me. Hence I have been active about the issue on Twitter this morning debating it.

But what about those with more influence in EU Transport policy than me? They too must have had advance notice...

So far not a peep from @bulc_eu about it on Twitter, or on her website, and no press statement from the Commission.

There's EU money put into these projects!

And what about my own party, the Greens?

We have long been sceptical about high speed rail, instead advocating a series of cheaper and more minor changes to get more people onto rail. This report basically underlines this. It's a win for us.

So far nothing from the @GreensEP here or on their website greens-efa.eu/en/newsroom/ne…

Nothing from Green chair of the transport committee @KarimaDelli on Twitter, Facebook or her website. And nothing from @MepMCramer either.

All of this rather disappoints me. The @EUauditors have done excellent work here. So where are the reactions? And don't tell me people did not have time - because we all had advance warning of this.
