1. DT says a country without physical borders isn't a country. His dislike of our southern neighbors, aside, this is a ridiculous concept - there are few physical borders in the world and immigration is hardly the biggest threat to sovereignty, but military invasion is.
2. Admittedly, I have some concern about what I see as a breakdown in historical knowledge as the millennial and subsequent generation became products of an educational system that forgoes social science and history for primarily statistically testable education.
3. Or perhaps it's not the breakdown in education, but just the differing experiences of these post-Cold War generations. I fear there is a lack of understanding about what the 'worst-case scenario' actually is.
4. Over time, we have seen empires rise and fall, world wars erupt, alliances and enemies made. We, as Americans, have been very lucky. We are distanced from out adversaries. We hold court on our continent. Our oceans protect us as much as military or diplomacy.
5. World Wars developed out of alliances, as well. Entities that gained power in military action and seizure of lands were strong enough to bring support or submission from other countries. Deals made for an uncertain future based on the current odds, no matter how depressing.
6. The intra-war period in Europe is a time worth studying. Especially for those who tout 'socialist' ideas as if we've never considered them before. Understanding that the answer for this country will exist in a balance between socialized institutions AND capitalism is crucial.
7. Can socialism be implemented under the rubric of democracy? Yes, in theory, but we've few examples of it on a large scale. Recognizing the progress we've made on certain programs as far back as FDR and as recent as Obama is what should give hope for social responsibility.
8. But, let's go back to borders for a moment. We've watched the borders of Eastern Europe morph over and over. Russia gained it's role as a 'superpower" through the systematic assimilation of small countries into their own empire.
9. These are countries that found their freedom through our interaction - and continue to find their freedom through the policies and infrastructures WE DESIGNED post WWII. Their fear isn't immigrants. Their fear is invasion and annexation.
10. To believe that Russia has no intention of wishing to grow again into the power that was once the Soviet Union is naive. To believe that their annexation of Crimea will not result in further action if they are not sufficiently checked is ridiculous.
11. And to believe that the weakening of the USA, NATO and the UN was not the primary reason they wanted DT to win is willfully ignorant. Those of you who make claims of "McCarthysim' and "Russiaphobia" are playing right into their hands.
12. This isn't 1970 where our primary fear is 'the domino effect of Communism'. Nor is it 1939 where we're trying to figure out how we maintain power and respect without entering into WWII. It's 2018 and a very new and unique threat has presented itself.
13, A president has taken office who received the express assistance of an adversarial power through criminal cyber-attacks. And every action he had done since taking office has served to weaken European alliances and strengthen Russia. Why do you think that is?
14. Look to history and ask yourself what Putin is trying to accomplish. This isn't partisan. This is national security and global safety.
