Some context on today’s topic. Abortion was always illegal in the Republic of Ireland. However it wasn’t always constitutionally banned. Changing laws is a politicians job in Ireland. But if we want to change the constitution, it requires a public vote.
So in 1983, following hysteria after the Roe v Wade case in the USA, there was a referendum held to include a constitutional provision equating the right to life of a mother with that of her unborn foetus.
Ireland has a long, shameful past with how it treats its women. And this constitutional amendment- The 8th Amendment- was no different. It put the state in control of our bodies.
