Skewing the narrative into something that it’s not is what’s not ok. We need to ask how Trudeau is going to pay for the processing and integration costs of people who have already reached the US, how that affects our capacity to take in refugees sitting in UN camps, and more.
And yes, it is illegal to enter Canada from the United States at a non official point of entry. It doesn’t make anyone racist to point that out. Should we be prioritizing asylum claims from people who have reached the United States? I would argue no.
Also, this Jennifer person assumes that the people entering Canada this way are desperate and vulnerable. Yet, Trudeau’s own Mibusters have said as many as 90% of certain cohorts do not have valid asylum claims.
She also assumes a lot about the financial capacity and nature of these people. The reality is that we don’t know - maybe were able to buy visas and plane tickets from Nigeria to the United States, for example. What are their demographic backgrounds? She doesn’t know.
This is why instead of prioritizing humanitarian immigration from the United States, we should be asking ourselves how we can better integrate the Syrian refugee cohort we accepted, and those languishing in UNHCR camps.
But Jennifer doesn’t want that debate. She just wants to cast aspersions and deflect from these tougher questions. I RT’d her because she typifies the ill informed left on this issue, and because her dialogue is damaging to the broader debate.
