Trump & Hillary were, by Election Day favorability, the two most disliked candidates in polling history. They couldn't both lose. That neither could muster a popular majority against such a dismal opponent is an indictment of both.
Yes, Hillary got more popular votes than George Washington. I would humbly submit that this has more to do with population growth than popularity.
Here is how Hillary would have fared in the Electoral College if she got the same number of votes she did, but the GOP ticket got the same share of all eligible voters as George W. Bush in 2004:
