On this day 53 years ago, LBJ signed the Voting Rights Act into law. It happened because people were willing to march, to protest, to be arrested, to put their lives on the line crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, to apply the pressure that formed the will to get it to his desk.
The work is far from over when we still have racial gerrymandering, people being purged from the rolls, voter ID laws that are designed to make it more difficult for black voters to cast their ballots. When we have parts of the Voting Rights Act being invalidated piece by piece.
Or when we have a nominee for a lifetime appointment on the Supreme Court who has weakened voting rights. We must use today's anniversary as a reminder of what John Lewis said while marching in Selma, "We’re not going back. We’re going to move forward."
