Friends, I have exciting news to share!
I am incredibly honored to be telling the story of the Wild Boars and their rescue from the cave in Thailand.
Allow me to also share some background behind this announcement…
This summer, I traveled to Thailand to visit my dad and other family who live there. My plane landed on the day the Wild Boars went missing. We spent most of our time in the North, not far from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave. This story riveted Thailand, as it did the world.
It’s hard to describe the feeling of being in the country during the rescue. The most succinct way I can express it is that for Thais, it felt like that was your brother/son/cousin/best friend trapped in there. The country’s heart was inside that cave for those entire 2+ wks.
The story did not leave my own heart, even when I flew back to the US and the rescue team began bringing the boys out. As thorough as the media coverage here was, there is so much more to this story than typically got reported.
As soon as the team was rescued and safe I started thinking about a book proposal.

But what really lit a fire under me was hearing that @jonmchu was taking on the film version to make sure that the Wild Boars’ story was told right.
I knew exactly how he felt. And I knew I wanted to do that same thing for young readers and the book version.
I wanted at least one book out there by someone with Thai heritage. Yes, it’s an international story, but it took place on Thai soil, with Thai rescuers and survivors. Understanding Thai culture, religion, and political issues is crucial to understanding how the rescue succeeded.
(And yes, I will also be geeking out in the book on all the STEM content involved - geology, hydrology, engineering, cave diving, etc. This engineer+science-nerd is going all in!)
I am thrilled the book is with @Candlewick. From the get-go they were on board with my vision, even though getting all the interviews to get the story right means that the book won’t come out right away.
Before I wrap up this thread, I have to thank my incredible agent @stephfret and everyone at @redfoxliterary. There is no other team I’d rather have in my corner. And Andrea TOMPA (they misspelled her name in the article!) is amazing. A super editor.
Lastly, the book will be dedicated to the memory of Saman Gunan, the Thai Navy SEAL who died during the rescue effort. He embodied heart and soul the spirit of the entire operation, especially the Thais who willingly and bravely put their lives on the line to save the boys.
Okay, friends. Thank you for all your support! More from me soon.
