When my random little Twitter account first started to take on a life of its own, the very first few “blue checkmark” who reached out to me was @MollyJongFast.

She’s an earnest, honest person whose inclination to trust is endearing and disarming.

Molly got played by a Twitter phony just like many of us have been at some point.

I know I’ve fallen for a couple of frauds before wising up.

Most of us mask the embarrassment of it all by rolling our eyes at those slower to catch on as if we’re somehow smarter.

Molly wrote a piece about the thing most of us sweep red-faced under the rug though.

It’s a poignant essay about more than that though. It’s a soulful, brave window into the person on the other side of the screen...

...and that person happens to be someone I really like.

Molly ends with a thought I’ve had myself more than once.

“Internet life [...] is lonely and painful and deeply isolating. Sometimes we think we connect but then learn that, as with so many things in modern life, none of it is real.”

4/
At the end of the day though, while not ALL of the connection of social media is real, some of it is.

There’s a person I met on Twitter who I shared my real identity with; who I’ve shown pictures of my son; who I’ve connected with on non-anonymous platforms...

5/
That person is Molly Jong-Fast.

Molls, your openness and willingness to trust are profoundly endearing. They’re attractive strengths unique to you.

Not everything on Twitter is real.

Our friendship is though.

Keep being you.
