You know what else sucks about being trans? Unless your parents have shown explicit support for trans folks, you have to be 100% ready to cut them out of your life before coming out to them. And that's regardless how much they said they support you. That's tough.
That's true for everyone you come out to, but it's often harder when it's family. You have to be ready to cut off every single person you come out to. And then if/when you publicly come out, then at least it's easier to weed out the rest.
I'd already came out as bi when I came out as trans, so most bigots were gone anyway. I started with work - something I'm infinitely grateful for being able to do - and only came out to my parents when I was ready to let them go.
Being queer in this society is tough. I personally think being queer is a liberation and living life to its best, but it's not all roses and sunshine. I wish.
