I fear that @JoshMBlackman is right in his assessment of the impact of the Chief Justice’s response to the President. nyti.ms/2DBp0sL
At the same time, it is also hard to see how the Chief Justice could stay quiet in the face of Trump’s attacks. At some point he just had to respond to defend the institution he leads, if for no other reason than morale within the judiciary.
Trump has a extraordinary capacity to put the leaders of important institutions in a “damned-if-you-respond, damned-if-you-don’t-respond” conundrum.
It’s not just the Chief Justice. It’s journalists, the FBI Director, bureaucrats, foreign allies, fellow Republicans, etc. When they respond to Trump’s attacks they often appear to be breaking norms and often do Trump’s bidding by weakening the institutions he is attacking.
