This is SO important. With white voters, religion is a determinative factor.
The intersection of race and religion is a significant aspect of voting, political attitude. Add in region and college education, and a much more nuanced portrait of white voters emerges.
The higher the percentage of white evangelicals in a given state or region, the more likely whites are to vote R & support Trump. The lower the % of white evangelicals, the less likely white voters (esp white women) are to vote R & support Trump.
And note: I didn't say "the determinative factor," but "a determinative factor" (and a significant one). There are a cluster of intersecting identity markers that work together in analyzing how white Americans vote.
The article is quite helpful. It suggests (to me at least) that it won't work to engage Democrats in evangelical-talk. But that Dems would benefit from moral, theological & spiritual languages that are NOT evangelical.
Narratives that value & affirm liberal religions, especially from Protestantism, Judaism, & Catholicism, in conversation w/world faiths & secular moral traditions around common good, love of neighbor & care for the earth will be a rewarding path for speaking faith in politics.
And not only "value & affirm," but that speak with power toward human liberation and the renewal of community and creation.
So, I'm not suggesting a nostalgic return to old mainline Prot theology.(Although some - like Douthat - do.) Rather, we would benefit from a genuinely new political theology that weaves threads of freedom & responsibility, neighborliness & hospitality, based in radical love.
