Suicides in TX's jails are a preventable tragedy. A significant percentage of county jail inmates have mental disorders and do not receive the treatment and care they deserve. We have to do more to ensure proper mental health screening

County jails in Texas held approximately 65,000 inmates during each of the last few years. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 64 percent of the jail population in the U.S. has a mental illness.

We can't jail our way out of a mental health crisis in this country.

Instead of taking full responsibility for this debacle, he passed the buck to the previous Secretary and the Department of Public Safety. #txlege
He did not provide a full accounting as to why his office issued a press statement after their inquiry and why they referred it to the Attorney General’s office when he testified that the list was flawed. #txlege

Harris County District Attorney @kimoggforda came into office promising to turn the criminal justice system around. But she has requested a $20 million dollar increase for her office to hire 102 prosecutors. This is a step in the wrong direction texascivilrightsproject.org/harrisco-ogg/
More prosecutors would result in more prosecutions and more people in our already crowded jails and prisons. More alarming is the fact that District Attorney Ogg makes this request without accounting for the current allocation of resources in her office. texascivilrightsproject.org/harrisco-ogg/
We need to look for ways to trim the District Attorney’s budget, not increase it. We should spend our limited resources on expanding educational, housing, occupational and public health services that include mental health counseling. texascivilrightsproject.org/harrisco-ogg/

Today, we are heading to the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit arguments in our Stringer v. Whitley case. This is our "motor voter" case against Texas for failing to comply with the federal National Voter Registration Act. We sued in 2016. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/t…
Because of Texas' failure to comply with the law, at least 1.5 million people are not receiving an opportunity to register to vote as required by federal law. Under the NVRA, eligible voters have a right to register to vote every time they update or renew their driver’s license.
Our clients attempted to update their driver’s licenses and voter registration records through the Department of Public Safety website but the state disregarded their registration request. When they tried to vote, they were not allowed to cast a regular ballot.

Must-read study in @JAMAPsych. Vulnerable adolescent psych inpatients were asked to name 3-4 caring adults in their lives, who then received brief training in how to be helpful. 10-14 yrs later, death rate (often #suicide-related) was 85% lower than in treatment-as-usual group.
The adults received a training session & 3 months of support. Over the years, seemingly they encouraged young patients to follow the treatment plan &, when necessary, undergo substance abuse Rx. No one who attended drug treatment committed suicide. Remarkable long-term follow-up.

[TW] It would be impossible to talk of health disparities in India and not address mental health. India ranked 43rd in the world on rates of suicide (in descending order) in 2009.
It is hard to find reliable data on suicide, as it is punishable offense in India, leading to under reporting. Death by suicide is frequently reported as due to illness or accidents to avoid involving the police. Official figures underestimate the problem

It also varies widely by state, region, gender, caste, socioeconomic background. Young adults(15-29) are the most vulnerable, having the highest rates of suicide, attempted suicide, and suicidal ideation and accounted for 34.5% of suicides in the country.

Hello. I'm someone living with depression and there have been times where I've just wanted to end it all, to disappear, to make it stop. Here's what I want you to do instead of posting #suicide hotline numbers:
Lobby for better healthcare conditions in America. Call your representatives and ask them to support affordable and easy access to mental healthcare treatment. Stop thinking emotional people are 'weak.' Help suicide prevention volunteers get paid for helping people stay alive.
The healthcare crisis in America impacts people with mental health issues. Medicine, therapists and wellness programs are expensive without healthcare. We can't afford treatment. We don't have access to the needs and conditions that can truly help prevent suicide.
