However, traditionally the Espionage Act has been used against US government officials, like Manning, who reveal such classified information, rather than foreign nationals who publish the information.
DOJ officials wouldn't elaborate on what led them to decide now to charge Assange with the Espionage Act rather than leave it at the original indictment on conspiracy to commit computer intrusion. Also wouldn't comment on how this might affect Assange's extradition.
