Tonight we dim the lights of our marquees in memory of the legendary Hal Prince, who died this morning at the age of 91.
This picture was taken moments before I had the I-cannot-believe-what-is-happening joy of sitting next to Hal in his rehearsal room for a run of his musical retrospective Prince of Broadway.
Sitting beside the visionary of Cabaret, Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Evita, Phantom and so many more as songs from those seminal pieces I have loved my whole life were performed just a few feet in front of us.
Listening to those songs that changed the world while listening to his sighs of delight as if he were hearing them for the very first time. Watching him re-examine these iconic scenes with new actors as if he were exploring new text.
For those two hours, I was living my most exhilarating theatre kid dream I never could have even imagined I had. Hal was always so astoundingly generous with his time and his insights, and I know that was true for everyone who sought his counsel,
whether seasoned professional or student just starting out. This morning when I heard he had died, I realized I had my glasses perched on my head just like he always did, and I knew he would always be with all of us who call Broadway home. #HalPrince #Legend
