After visiting a few faded but still fiercely maintained tourist spots along old Route 66, I have to say: that is such a natural setting/theme for a Fallout game.
The themes in Fallout of decay and fading Americana, clinging to a past that is itself about an absurdly optimistic future... it's Route 66 in a nutshell.
I mean, right now, today, you can go to Catoosa, Oklahoma and visit a metal and wood and concrete blue whale that is a dock sticking out of an old fishing hole. It's part of a fenced-in grounds, there's a small gift shop and info stand. The local who maintain it are justly proud.
But there's a sadness in there. Also on the grounds are the ruins of a great ark that was once a reptile zoo. Across the street is an intact but I believe inoperative trading post that once sold Native art and jewelry (by the artist).
I know Bethesda's basically never going to acknowledge or build on Fallout: New Vegas, but honestly... the Courier (maybe a second generation character) on Route 66 would be a great game.

Fallout 66.
Basically, nothing else I have seen in real life has been as Fallout as basically anything you can find on Route 66.
I should say I think it was @sakunamera who first noted how very Fallout the whole encounter with the blue whale was, and as soon as she said it, I couldn't stop thinking about it.
