Ever wondered why IndiGo has faced so many in-flight engine shutdowns linked to low-pressure turbines on Airbus A320neos, while Go Air hasn't? Turns out it's all about how IndiGo flies its jets. #AvGeek
IndiGo follows a practice of revving Airbus A320neo jets at full thrust right after takeoff that could wear down the engines, an investigation by India's DGCA found. Go Air, which uses a so-called alt-climb approach that applies less thrust, hasn't had any such issuers this year.
Climbing at full thrust can help planes burn less fuel, sources told us. IndiGo has had 13 incidents on in-flight engine shutdowns linked to LPTs this year, compared with Go Air's zero. DGCA ran a comparative analysis on how both airlines operate.
IndiGo said the matter is “strictly between the airline and the concerned authorities.” The U.S. FAA hasn’t established any connection between the climb procedure and engine problems and the safety of passengers, crew and aircraft remains the utmost priority, IndiGo said.
Airbus said A320neos are designed to handle full thrust, but “established best practice” is to lower the thrust while climbing to reduce stress on the engine. IndiGo must replace 110 engines before Jan. 31 to avoid idling jets, which analysts say is unlikely.
IndiGo flies the aircraft “hard” with a high number of hours, said Michael Schreyoegg, chief program officer at Germany’s MTU Aero Engines AG, a partner with Pratt on the GTF engine. His comment was in response to a question why IndiGo keeps having engine woes while others don’t.
