The official FB page of the Cambria County (PA) GOP has been minimizing the coronavirus for weeks now. This is what they posted three days ago.
FB marked it as false information. This led several commenters to complain about how FB censors conservatives like them. (FWIW, the information is intentionally misleading.)
The partisan, weaponized disinformation has been going on for almost two weeks now.
The shot/chaser possibilities here are endless.
And of course, the virus is a hoax but also it’s so powerful governments can’t stop it so why should we trust them to stop climate change which is also a hoax and....
I don't post about this county's GOP to be snarky. I do it because I grew up in that county and I know many people who still live there, some of whom are being dangerously misinformed and manipulated by this FB page and the GOP "leaders" who run it.
I've watched over the past few years as the GOP transformed a good number of people I grew up with into enraged partisan warriors, folks who now think it's 1 minute to midnight and they'll need to grab their guns and start shooting their way to freedom.
I am not exaggerating when I say that this county's GOP page is frequented by numerous people who openly talk about the impending need to wield lethal violence against their fellow Americans, including their own neighbors who happen to be Democrats.
There have always been angry, violent people in the US. That's not new and such people will always, sadly, be with us. But what's notable here is that the "leaders" of a political party would just let such talk go unchecked, unremarked upon.
Never have they offered a fact check on some outrageous meme they posted. Never have they stepped in to calm down a conversation where people are eagerly fantasizing about a Civil War where "we have all the guns" so "we'll" win. Never. Not. Once.
Institutions are important because they shape the people who inhabit them. People in positions of authority within institutions have an extra responsibility to act and speak in ways that are reality-based, and conducive to the common good.
Ever since the days of Newt Gingrich, Tom DeLay, and Dick Armey, the GOP has been elevating complete doofuses to leadership positions. It's an old story. We've just reached what I hope is its apogee in 2020.
I'm not saying all Democratic elected officials are perfect. I mean, that doofus Blagojevich was a Democrat. But taken as a whole, the GOP has a far, far greater percentage of top-grade doofuses than the Democrats...by far. And because they have power, we're all suffering for it.
Finished typing up this thread, saw Michael Flynn trending, and yeah....as I was saying, GOP leaders and utter, complete, and irredeemable doofusness.
