I can't stop thinking about the #Eagles' decision to draft WR Jalen Reagor over WR Justin Jefferson -- who went one pick later, to the #Vikings
Was it speed, like @MoveTheSticks suggested? I don’t think so.

Justin Jefferson: 4.43 forty-yard-dash
Jalen Reagor: 4.47 forty-yard-dash

So, why did one of the league’s most statistically-minded / forward-thinking GMs decide to take Reagor over Jefferson?

Roseman made this point very clear: Outside Separation
The implication of course is:

1) Jefferson can’t separate consistently on the outside
2) Outside separation is more important, more valuable, more rare, etc.

Or, essentially, #SWRDM

Here was one of my write-ups on Jefferson back in February.

Note: Jefferson ran 99% of his routes from the slot in 2019, compared to just 33% for Reagor

What’s most interesting about all this is that if Howie Roseman is right, Minnesota is probably the worst possible landing spot for Jefferson
1) Redundancy

- Minnesota's best WR (Adam Thielen) is most effective in the slot

2) Poor Scheme Fit

- Only one team (the Eagles) ran out of 12 personnel more often than the Vikings last season

- No team had a slot WR on the field running a route less often than MIN last year
What’s doubly alarming (if I’m a Vikings fan) is GM Rick Spielman – who once traded R1 and a R4 picks for Sam Bradford and his 4.49 ANY/A average – doesn’t seem to care about any of this.

A savvy reporter had asked him about this and he gave the wrong answer:
/End

GM quotes (and additional analysis) can be found in my Post-Draft Presser Review column from April: fantasypoints.com/nfl/articles/s…

And from that article, here's my full more-nuanced but mostly critical thoughts on the pick and Rick Spielman as a GM
As a quick addendum

It's also clear Howie (smartly) valued on-the-field speed far more than Combine speed. While, clearly (stupidly), that 4.43 40 meant a lot to Rick
