JUST IN: New @CBSNewsPoll Battleground Tracker numbers from Pennsylvania and Wisconsin give @JoeBiden an edge over @realDonaldTrump in part because vast majority of voters in the two states say things in the U.S. are going badly.
Looking back now, relatively few voters in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin say the Trump presidency has been going as they expected; more say it's gone worse than gone better. Four years ago, late-deciding voters in these 2 states put Trump over the top.
Trump gets negative marks for handling the coronavirus outbreak in PA & WI, as in other battlegrounds we've polled so far. Biden leads on being seen as better able to handle the virus.
Two-thirds of registered voters in PA & WI dislike how the president handles himself personally, and he's losing them by more than four to one. And Biden is seen by more as understanding of their needs and concerns.
Biden is winning 3 in 4 voters who are very concerned about getting coronavirus; Trump winning 9 in 10 voters not at all concerned. The issue for the president is that more voters are very concerned about the virus than not.
NOTABLE: Among *likely voters,* @JoeBiden’s running mate choice is more important to those less strong in their support of him than it is to the most committed part of his base. Of those not voting for but who say they‘d consider him, 7 in 10 say the VP pick is important.
SKIPPING MILWAUKEE IS OK WITH BIDEN BACKERS: “Nearly nine in 10 Biden supporters in Wisconsin say it's too risky for him to hold events in their state because of the coronavirus outbreak.”
TRUMP BACKERS WANT HIM OUT AND ABOUT: About two-thirds of Mr. Trump's supporters in PA & WI say their candidate should be holding public events.
VOTE BY MAIL? PA & WI voters think it should be easier to vote by mail. Republicans are generally opposed to making it easier to vote by mail and instead prefer keeping the system as it is. (These states have absentee voting with no excuse required.)
MORE ON THE HORSERACE: @JoeBiden doing better in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania than Democrats did in 2016 with White men and White women. In Pennsylvania, he's doing better than @HillaryClinton among White voters with a college degree – he leads by double digits.
Also notable: In Wisconsin, 8% of Republicans are voting for Biden, just 2% of Democrats going to Trump. And it is Republicans who say things are going badly where Biden is getting some of this crossover support: 10% in Pennsylvania and 14% in Wisconsin are voting for Biden.
