History Of #GaneshChaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi was 1st celebrated when the Chalukya, Satavahana & Rashtrakuta dynasties ruled between 271 BC and 1190 AD.

However, the first historical record of Ganesh Chaturthi celebration dates back to the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.1/6
Lord Ganesha was considered to be their Kuladevata. Shivaji Maharaj started, Ganesh Chaturthi with great fervour in Pune in 1600s.

The tradition was taken forward by the #Peshwas.

In 1818 the last Peshwa was defeated by the britishers in the 3rd battle of Panipat. 2/6
Then the Peshwai ended, along with that, the grand celebration of  Ganesh Chaturthi was also discontinued.

Centuries later the festival was reinvented as a symbol of nationalistic movement By Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
Tilak came up with the practice of Visarjan too. 3/6
Tilak & his fellow freedom fighters used this festival as a tool to unify the Hindus.
They popularised the festival to bridge the gap between Bramhins & Non Bramhins, the Lord Ganesha was used as unifier, as he considered the "God of Everyone".4/6
Tilak transformed the household festival into grand carnival.
This played a huge role in making the masses, a part of Indian national movement.
The mass gatherings were a huge achievement since, at the time, the British govt discouraged public gatherings. 5/6
Now, it has been more then 125 years, the practice that started in 1893, hasn't been discontinued.

Lord ganesha not only worshiped in India, but also in Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Japan, Nepal. 6/6
