The Feds arrested a Greensboro North Carolinaman for running a series of COVID frauds. The charging document is pretty plain. I found the seizure notice on his websites last month. It’s a fascinating ride and a lovely story of astroturfing.
First, he took our Facebook Ads offering help getting covid loans in exchange for a fee
His website said he worked with a number of large corporations, including the Times (I checked, they didn’t)
He paid 400 dollars for a press release which got put up on a CBS website. Then told folks he worked with CBS and gave the link.
According to court documents, He purportedly paid someone on Fiverr $52.50 for a Forbes story. Then used that to look more legit on his Covid fraud site.
Then he created a website called USAweekly that looked like a news site to push his Covid fraud scams.
Additionally, he ran another website called help the media dot com which when I checked last month has the logos of every major news org on it. The website said that he was basically a fixer. People would submit their expertise and Lewis would connect them with media.
Website is still up. Also I don’t believe Jake Enem is a real person.
Here’s his Forbes quote. Piece still up.
I’ll end there. DOJ press release is up but doesn’t have these details. That is to say, there’s always more to a story and it’s not particularly hard to fake it till you make it online with a bit of disinformation and astroturfing.

Also, I thought it was a good story. I tried a bunch of places for a month. Then I tried to just beg for interest. No one bit.

Also if you run a story on these details without a hattip, just know you and I will both know where you got it given the seizure notice is hidden a bit. It’ll be awkward for the both of us but I’ll ultimately forgive you.
