"With the northern hemisphere flu season approaching, & with #COVID19 cases & hospitalizations increasing, many countries find themselves struggling to strike the right balance between protecting public health, protecting personal liberty & protecting their economies"-@DrTedros
"So-called lockdowns and the impact on global travel and trade have already taken such a heavy toll.

The global economy is expected to contract by trillions of dollars this year"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"Many countries have poured money into domestic stimulus packages. But these investments will not on their own address the root cause of the economic crisis – which is the disease that paralyses health systems, disrupts economies & drives fear & uncertainty"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"We continue to urge countries to:

1⃣prevent amplifying events

2⃣protect the vulnerable

3⃣educate, empower & enable communities to protect themselves & others

4⃣find, isolate, test & care for #COVID19 cases, & trace & quarantine their contacts

This is what works"-@DrTedros
"Effective vaccines, diagnostics & therapeutics will be vital for ending the #COVID19 pandemic & accelerating the 🌍 recovery.
But these life-saving tools will only be effective if they are available for the most vulnerable equitably & simultaneously in all countries"-@DrTedros
"The Access to #COVID19 Tools Accelerator is the best bet for speeding up the development of the tools we need to save lives as fast as possible, and to make them available for as many people as possible, as equitably as possible"-@DrTedros
"Today, WHO and our partners are publishing a detailed strategic plan and investment case for the urgent scale-up phase of the ACT Accelerator, building on the success of the start-up phase"-@DrTedros #COVID19 bit.ly/30bzERI
"The investment case illustrates some of the considerable economic benefits from accelerating the development and deployment of tools to rapidly reduce the risk of severe #COVID19 disease globally"-@DrTedros
"By the end of next year, the ACT Accelerator aims to deliver 2 billion doses of #COVID19 vaccine;

245 million courses of treatment;

and 500 million diagnostic tests to low- and middle-income countries"-@DrTedros

"Today’s status report shows that in just 5 months, the ACT Accelerator has made remarkable progress.

The diagnostics pillar is evaluating more than 50 tests, including rapid and accurate diagnostics"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"The therapeutics pillar is analysing more than 1,700 clinical trials for promising treatments, and has secured courses of dexamethasone for up to 4.5 million patients in lower-income countries – the only medicine shown to reduce the risk of death so far"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"COVAX – the largest and most varied portfolio of #COVID19 vaccines globally – is supporting the development of 9 vaccines, and with several more in the pipeline"-@DrTedros
"The number of countries joining the COVAX Facility grows every day. As of today, 67 high-income economies have formally joined and another 34 are expected to sign, joining 92 lower-income countries who are eligible for financial support through @gavi"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"Investing in COVAX increases the probability of being able to access the best vaccine and hedges the risk that countries that have entered into bilateral agreements end up with products that are not viable"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"The ACT Accelerator is an unprecedented global effort.

Realizing its vision needs investment.

The current financing gap for the ACT Accelerator stands at $35 billion"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"$35 billion dollars is a lot of money. But in the context of arresting a global pandemic and supporting the global economic recovery, it’s a bargain"-@DrTedros #COVID19 bit.ly/30bzERI
"To put it in perspective, $35 billion is less than 1% of what @g20org governments have already committed to domestic economic stimulus packages.

Or to put it another way, it’s roughly equivalent to what the world spends on cigarettes every 2 weeks"-@DrTedros #COVID19
"Of the $35 billion, $15 billion is needed immediately to fund research and development, scale up manufacturing, secure procurement and strengthen delivery systems"-@DrTedros #COVID19

bit.ly/30bzERI
"Normally these steps are done sequentially. We’re doing them all at the same time, so that as soon as a product is ready to go, we can get it to the people who need it immediately"-@DrTedros #COVID19 bit.ly/30bzERI
"We are not asking for an act of charity. We are asking for an investment in the global recovery.

The economic benefits from restoring international travel and trade alone would repay this investment very quickly"-@DrTedros #COVID19 bit.ly/30bzERI
"Next Wednesday, 🌍 leaders will meet virtually at #UNGA to discuss the work of the ACT Accelerator & to call for the financial commitments to realize its promise.
The window of opportunity is now. We must act now, & act together to end #COVID19"-@DrTedros

LIVE: @DrTedros' briefing on the health situation in #Gaza to the @UN Security Council twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"Let me be clear from the outset that I fully understand the anger, grief and fear of the Israeli people following the horrific, barbaric and unjustifiable attacks by Hamas and other armed groups on Israeli civilians on the 7th of October.

The killing of 1,400 people, and injuries to more than 7,200 others, is bad enough. For the survivors and families of victims, the mental health consequences will endure for a long time to come.

WHO is gravely concerned for the health and well-being of Israeli hostages in Gaza, many of whom are older people, children and those with urgent medical needs"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros @UN "Two weeks ago, I spoke with families of hostages, and I will meet them in Geneva next week. I feel their heartache and fear"-@DrTedros

Media briefing on the health situation in Gaza and Israel, and other global health issues with @DrTedros twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"We are running out of words to describe the horror unfolding in Gaza.

Since Hamas’s horrific attacks on Israel on the 7th of October, more than 10,000 people have been killed, including over 8,500 in Gaza and 1400 in Israel. In both Israel and Gaza, 70% of those killed are women and children"-@DrTedros
"More than 21,000 are injured and more than 1.4 million people in Gaza have been displaced.

The situation on the ground, in Gaza, is indescribable.

Hospitals crammed with the injured, lying in corridors;

Morgues overflowing;

Doctors performing surgery without anaesthesia;

Thousands of people seeking shelter from the bombardment;

Families crammed into overcrowded schools, desperate for food and water;

Toilets overflowing and the risk of disease outbreaks spreading;

And everywhere, fear, death, destruction, loss"-@DrTedros

In 1969, Tu Youyou was tasked to search for antimalarial drugs.  She turned to ancient Chinese #TraditionalMedicine books & discovered artemisinin. In 2015, Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize for her work on #malaria, which has saved millions of lives.

After testing – unsuccessfully -- over 240 000 compounds for use in antimalarials, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, head of the Project 523 to discover a cure for chloroquine-resistant malaria, turned to traditional Chinese medical literature for clues. There, she and her team found a reference to sweet wormwood to treat intermittent fevers. In 1971, Tu Youyou’s team isolated artemisinin, an active compound in sweet wormwood that was particularly effective in treating malaria. Artemisinin is now recommended by the World Health Organization as the first and second line of treatment for malaria....

When Dr Luis Miramontes stabilised the synthetic hormone, norethindrone, he was unaware of his major contribution to women’s health and history.
