President Trump in WH Rose Garden nominates Amy Coney Barrett to US Supreme Court to succeed the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: "She is a woman of unparalleled achievement, towering intellect, sterling credentials and unyielding loyalty to the Constitution."
POTUS: "I want to thanks the members of the Senate. We have so many of them here today. Thank you very much. I see you in the audience and you're so proud. But, I want to thank you for the commitment and to providing a fair and timely hearing. I know it will be that."
President Trump: "Judge Barrett was confirmed to the Circuit Court three years ago by a bipartisan vote."
POTUS at WH pointing to GOP Senators: "Her qualifications are unsurpassed and her record is beyond reproach. This should be a straightforward and prompt confirmation. Very easy. Good luck."
Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett: "I fully understand that this is a momentous decision for a President. And if the Senate does me the honor of confirming me, I pledge to discharge the responsibilities of this job to the very best of my ability."
Judge Barrett: "Should I be confirmed, I will be mindful of who came before me. The flag of the United States is still flying at half-staff in memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to mark the end of a great American life...She not only broke glass ceilings, she smashed them."
Judge Barrett with members of Scalia family at WH on clerking for the late Justice: "His judicial philosophy is mine too. A judge must apply the law as written. Judges are not policymakers and they must be resolute in setting aside any policy views they might hold."
Judge Barrett: "The President has asked me to become the ninth Justice. And as it happens. I'm used to being in a group of nine, my family."
McConnell: "President Trump could not have made a better decision. Judge Amy Coney Barrett is an exceptionally impressive jurist and an exceedingly well-qualified nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States."
McConnell: “The Senate will evaluate this nomination on the basis of Judge Barrett’s objective qualifications. But it cannot escape notice that this nominee has also already won national admiration for her shining example of strong female leadership at the very top of her field."
McConnell: "As our nation continues to mourn Justice Ginsburg and honor her trail-blazing legacy, it does seem fitting that another brilliant and talented woman at the height of their shared profession would follow in her footsteps onto the Court."
McConnell:“I look forward to meeting with the nominee next week and will carefully study her record & credentials. As I have stated, this nomination will receive a vote on the Senate floor in the weeks ahead, following the work of the Judiciary Cmte supervised by Chairman Graham."
McConnell:"The Court, the Senate, and the American people, not to mention the nominee and her family, deserve a fair process that is focused on Judge Barrett’s qualifications. I hope all 100 Senators will treat this serious process with the dignity and respect it should command."
Schumer on opposing Supreme Court Justice nominee Barrett:"The American people should make no mistake—a vote by any Senator for Judge Amy Coney Barrett is a vote to strike down the Affordable Care Act & eliminate protections for millions of Americans w/pre-existing conditions."
Schumer:"By nominating Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Ct,President Trump has once again put Americans’ healthcare in the crosshairs. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage, unabated by this Administration, healthcare was already the number 1 issue on the ballot in Nov."
Schumer:"President Trump and Leader McConnell are doing what no Senate has done before: shamelessly rushing to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat less than 40 days before a presidential election."
Schumer: "Justice Ginsburg’s dying wish was that she not be replaced until a new president is installed. Republicans are poised to not only ignore her wishes, but to replace her with someone who could tear down everything that she built."
Schumer on the Senate confirmation process for Supreme Court Justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett: "This reprehensible power grab is a cynical attack on the legitimacy of the Court. I will strongly oppose this nomination."
Senate Judiciary Chair Graham: "Judge Barrett is highly qualified in all the areas that matter – character, integrity, intellect, and judicial disposition. She is an outstanding Supreme Court nominee by President Trump."
Graham (R-SC): "As the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I’m very committed to ensuring that the nominee gets a challenging, fair, and respectful hearing."
Graham (R-SC): "We move forward on this nomination knowing that the President has picked a highly qualified individual who will serve our nation well on the highest court in the land.”
Senate Judiciary Top Democrat Feinstein: "Judge Amy Coney Barrett clearly passes the president’s conservative litmus tests or he wouldn’t have nominated her."
Feinstein (D-CA): "Judge Barrett’s record shows she would push the Supreme Court further to the right, putting many rights and protections that the American people have fought for and deeply cherish at risk."
Feinstein (D-CA): "With Judge Barrett’s confirmation, the Supreme Court unfortunately could repeal the Affordable Care Act and deny millions of Americans health insurance in the midst of a global pandemic."
Feinstein (D-CA): "She has stated her opposition to the law and said Chief Justice Roberts' decision in NFIB v. Sebelius ‘pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute'."
Feinstein: “The court could also overturn Roe v. Wade, stripping women of the right to control their reproductive systems. She has argued that justices have the right to ignore that precedent if they believe the Constitution doesn’t protect a woman’s right to choose."
Feinstein: “President Trump has guaranteed that Judge Barrett will deliver on these and so many other conservative priorities. In doing so, Judge Barrett would stand as the polar opposite to the vision of America that Justice Ginsburg fought for decades to achieve."
Feinstein: “There are now only 38 days until the election, and early voting has already begun in many states. No Supreme Court vacancy has been filled this close to a presidential election."
Senate Judiciary Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-CA): “The Senate should not consider any Supreme Court nominee until the American people have spoken in November and the next president has been inaugurated.”
Romney: “Amy Coney Barrett is a highly-respected jurist with distinguished legal and academic credentials. My constitutional role to provide advice and consent on a Supreme Court nomination is one of my most serious responsibilities as a senator.”
Romney:”And I believe our next justice must faithfully apply the law and our Constitution, impartially and regardless of policy preferences. I look forward to meeting with Judge Barrett, reviewing her record thoroughly, and carefully evaluating her qualifications.”
Virginia Senator Tim Kaine who was one of 3 Democrats to vote Yes on Judge Barrett to US Court of Appeals in 2017: “I’ve said from the beginning that Senator McConnell should follow his own precedent from 2016: this vacancy should be filled by the winner of the ongoing election.”
Kaine (D-VA): “I intend to follow that precedent and will not support anyone’s confirmation until we know the election results. There are less than 40 days between now and Election Day, and voting is already underway in Virginia and other states.”
Kaine (D-VA): “Given the stakes—health care, fundamental rights, the integrity of the Court—rushing a confirmation vote before the American people have weighed in would be reckless.”
WV Senator Joe Manchin who was one of 3 Democrats to vote Yes to confirm Judge Barrett to US Court of Appeals in 2017: “As West Virginia’s Senator, I have always taken my Constitutional obligation to advise & consent on a nominee for a Supreme Court vacancy extremely seriously.”
Manchin (D-WV): “I will review Judge Coney Barrett’s legal qualifications and judicial philosophy just as I have done with every Supreme Court nominee that has come before the Senate during my time as a Senator.”
Manchin:”Rushing to confirm a Supreme Court nominee weeks before a presidential election has never been done before in the history of our nation and it will only fan the flames of division at a time when our country is deeply divided.”
Manchin: “I cannot support a process that risks further division of the American people at a time when we desperately need to come together. I will not vote to confirm Judge Coney Barrett or any Supreme Court nominee before Election Day on November 3rd.”
Manchin: “ I urge my Republican friends to slow down, put people before politics, and give their constituents a chance to vote.”
Judiciary Democrat Minority Whip Durbin: “President Trump and Majority Leader McConnell want to rush Judge Barrett’s nomination through the Senate before those two dates arrive.”
Durbin (D-IL):”It is clear why Republicans have reversed their position from 2016 about giving the American people ‘a voice’ in filling an election year vacancy.  They want another vote on the Supreme Court for their lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act.”
Judiciary Republican Sasse: “Judge Barrett is a brilliant legal thinker and will be an excellent Supreme Court Justice. Despite her unsurpassed character, reputation, and intellect, this confirmation process will be nasty.”
Sasse (R-NE):”Why?Because too many on the left(& sadly some on the right as well) want judges who will substitute their own will for the law.Judge Barrett is not that kind of judge. She believes her duty isn’t to arbitrarily slop applesauce on stone tablets and declare new laws.”
Sasse: “Her duty is to cloak her personal views under a black robe and to faithfully uphold the Constitution. That makes her a problem to rabid partisans, and an ally to the rule of law.”
Judiciary Dem Whitehouse: “It doesn’t matter who the nominee is;it matters who’s behind this pick. The American people overwhelmingly want the president sworn in in Jan to replace Justice Ginsburg. We do not know who that president will be.Justice Ginsburg hasn’t even been buried.”
Whitehouse (D-RI): “My Republican colleagues must remember that the legitimacy of the Senate and our judiciary are on the line. They ought to think twice about forcing this nomination through.”
Majority Whip Thune: “Judge Barrett deeply respects the Constitution, and she is committed to interpreting the law as written and applying it faithfully and impartially. Simply put, she doesn’t legislate from the bench.”
Thune (R-SD): “While I look forward to meeting Judge Barrett and learning more about her experience, her resume speaks for itself...Unfortunately, Democrats have been opposed to Judge Barrett since before she was even nominated.”
Majority Whip Thune on Senate Democrats: “I hope they abandon their partisan and undemocratic threats as the Senate turns its attention to fulfilling its constitutional duty of providing its advice and consent on the president’s nominee.”
Judiciary Democrat Coons: “With voting already underway in half the states in our presidential election and in the midst of a global pandemic that has infected 7 million Americans, we should not be proceeding with a nomination to fill Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat.”
Coons (D-DE): “Instead of throwing the country into another bitter fight, I call on my Republican colleagues to defer consideration of Judge Barrett’s nomination and focus on the critical work of providing another round of pandemic relief to the millions of Americans in need.”
Judiciary Republican and former Chair Grassley: “She is eminently qualified for the Supreme Court. In the coming weeks, we’ll take another close look at her legal career, writings and decisions, and I’ll evaluate her nomination on the merits, as I always have.”
Grassley (R-IA): “I hope that the process going forward is one of respect and civility befitting the Senate and the Supreme Court. Americans, the nominee, and this committee do not deserve a repeat of the shenanigans on display from the left that we saw in 2018.”
Judiciary Democrat & fmr Chair Leahy:”Yesterday,I stood by Justice Ginsburg as she lay in state at the US Capitol, honoring her life, her legacy, and our friendship. Today, barely a wk after she passed,President Trump has nominated Judge Barrett to fill her seat on the Supreme Ct.”
Leahy (D-VT): “Justice Ginsburg hasn’t even been laid to rest yet. There is no mystery surrounding the Republicans’ mad rush to fill this vacancy before an election that is just 38 days away.”
Leahy:”I will scrutinize Judge Barrett’s nomination as I have the 19 others over my 46 yrs in the Senate w/an exhaustive examination of her record.Yet a dark cloud looms over this nomination,as President Trump & Senate Republicans are dispensing with any sense of basic decency.”
Leahy “...along with every single precedent and principle the Senate once stood for, in order to reshape the Court to deprive millions of Americans of healthcare and unravel their constitutional protections.”
Judiciary Democrat Hirono: ““I will not support the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett...Judge Barrett has an ideological agenda she won’t acknowledge and an expressed willingness to overturn Supreme Court precedent.”
Hirono (D-HI): “Senate Republicans have gone back on their word about confirming a Supreme Court justice in an election year and disrespected the final, fervent wish of Justice Ginsburg to not be replaced until a new president is installed.”
Judiciary Republican Ernst: “Today,Judge Amy Coney Barrett joins a growing, but still far too small, group of women nominated to serve on our nation’s highest court.Judge Barrett is an experienced jurist,a working mom of seven,an accomplished legal scholar,& a fellow Midwesterner.”
Ernst (R-IA): “I look forward to meeting with and vetting Judge Barrett for this nomination. She deserves a fair and honest confirmation process—and I hope my colleagues across the aisle will work with us to make that happen.”
Judiciary Democrat Klobuchar: “This is a nominee who has repeatedly signaled her willingness to overturn important Supreme Court precedents.”
Klobuchar (D-MN): “I am disappointed the President is not honoring Justice Ginsburg’s final and ‘ most fervent wish’ that she not be replaced until after a new president is installed.”
Murkowski (R-AK): “For weeks I have stated that I do not support taking up a potential Supreme Court vacancy this close to an election.”
Murkowski:”But today the President exercised his constitutional authority to nominate an individual to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.I welcome the opportunity to meet with the Supreme Court nominee, just as I did in 2016.”
Judiciary Republican Cruz on Judge Barrett upcoming confirmation hearing.
Judiciary Democrat Booker: “President Trump’s Senate allies are rushing this nominee forward while Americans are already voting in this November’s election.“
Booker: “Supreme Court is facing a crisis of legitimacy, precipitated by the President’s & Senate Republicans’ pursuit of power at all costs. This crisis will be further deepened if they succeed in confirming a justice through this rushed, cynical,& partisan confirmation process.”
Judiciary Dem/VP candidate Harris on SCOTUS nominee Barrett:"We must respect Americans’ voices & allow the winners of the election to nominate & confirm the next Supreme Ct Justice...I will continue to fight on behalf of the people & strongly oppose the president’s nomination.”
Judiciary Republican Crapo who attending today's SCOTUS announcement at WH: "As the confirmation process continues, I look forward to the opportunity to meet with Judge Barrett to learn and understand more deeply about her judicial philosophy."
Crapo (R-ID): "I will conduct all due diligence to ensure my consideration of and votes regarding her nomination remain consistent with the principles and values of Idahoans.”
Judiciary GOP Senator Kennedy (LA): "President Trump has nominated an impressive jurist in Judge Barrett, who has real-world experience in the classroom and in the courtroom."
Kennedy:"One of the most sacred jobs Louisianians sent me to do is to vet nominees for lifetime appts to the highest ct in the land.I will join my colleagues on the Judiciary Cmte in doing just that, fairly & thoroughly.I look fwd to hearing from Judge Barrett in the coming days.”
Judiciary Democrat Blumenthal: "I will oppose the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett, as I would any nominee proposed as part of this illegitimate sham process, barely one month before an election as Americans are already casting their votes."
blumenthal.senate.gov/newsroom/press…
Blumenthal: “I refuse to treat this process as legitimate and will not meet with Judge Barrett.” The Connecticut Democratic Senator met with President Trump's first Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch in 2017, but not with Brett Kavanaugh in 2018.
Judiciary Republican Lee: “Judge Barrett is going to be a fantastic Supreme Court justice. I think she’ll be a textualist and an originalist. She’ll be devoted to the principle of constitutionally limited government. That’s what President Trump promised his voters.”
Lee (R-UT): “It is what I promised my voters. And we are going to keep our promise to the voters who elected us.”
Judiciary Republican Marsha Blackburn (TN) attended the WH Supreme Court nomination announcement.

Justice Alito responds to Senate Judiciary Chair Durbin: "There is no valid reason for my recusal in this case. Sen. Durbin’s letter expressed the view recusal is necessary because I participated in 2 interviews that resulted in 2 articles about my work that appeared in the WSJ."
Alito: "There was nothing out of the ordinary about the interviews in question. Over the years, many Justices have participated in interviews with representatives of media entities that have frequently been parties in cases before the Court."
Altio: "We are required to put favorable or unfavorable comments and any personal connections with an attorney out of our minds and judge the cases based solely on the law and the facts. And that is what we do."
