Bronze has always been regarded as a precious metal / alloy. That’s why even in Olympics, after gold and silver medals, the third medal is of bronze. In Indian society, it has been primarily used for serving ware & Pooja articles! #MakeInIndia #AatmaNirbharBharat
In Pooja articles, Bronze bells are of special significance as they make amazingly soothing and long reverberating sound and hence bronze is also called bell metal! See the small glimpse. #MakeInIndia #AatmaNirbharBharat
One more of Bell sound video... #MakeInIndia #AatmaNirbharBharat
Emergence of relatively cheaper stainless steel 50-60 yrs back made Kansa and other traditional metals like Copper and Brass lose prominence in homes. Those born before 90s will remember utensils, Thalis(plates), Katoris(bowls) etc being used of the above metals at their homes...
Diwali cleaning often involved taking out old heirloom brass, copper & kansa items and making them shine with lemon or pitambri powder... each metal had its own significance and use... and did need a little bit more maintenance than steel
As for significance and use, the saying goes पीतल में पकाओ, काँसे में खाओ, ताम्बे में पीयो, स्वस्थ जीयो (Cook in brass, eat in Kansa (bronze), drink in copper, live healthy). This was what was happening for hundreds of years in most Indian households... ImageImage
However, emergence of steel coupled with changing lifestyle habits changed all these centuries old traditions. Steel was cheap, heavily industrialised, mass produced, easy to maintain and multi-utility (could be used to cook, drink & serve)
For Kansa(bronze), brass & copper to compete with steel on price points became extremely difficult. As Kansa is an alloy of copper(78%) & tin(22%) (though ratio differs from region to region and as per end use.
To reduce prices to compete with steel, Kansa makers started buying scrap and recycled copper & tin from after market. This copper mainly came from electric wires etc... hence had high lead content. This obviously was not ideal for products used for food consumption...
Kansa products made from such sub par quality copper started having issues. Pickle or curd would turn sour if kept for long. The metal itself would turn green easily.. thus the popularity and usage decreased even more.
What was common household item became very ceremonial. Purchases were done only on special occasion to comply with traditions. Like Kansa thalis were popular for wedding functions & poojas so were bought or taken out only at these functions. ImageImage
In many communities, a baby’s first solid food is generally given exclusively in Kansa bowls. Or baby’s kaada, home remedies etc are made in Kansa, because of belief that this aids in digestion. (In this image, I am feeding my newborn baby with Kansa baby spoon and bowl) Image
A lot has changed and many of these practices have disappeared at least in urban settings. However, in recent years as interest has spiked in healthy and organic living... interest in these traditional metals has also increased. ImageImage
With the desire to revive the 900 years old heritage and to offer the most superior & premium quality Kansa in the most ethical way, Kansara Metalex Pvt Ltd (My Fufaji’s company) was formed... with our KANSARA showroom being the factory outlet for Jodhpur people Image
The enterprise is a rare confluence of traditional values & practices with modern processes & technologies. For ex, The plant has modern machineries. However, the Kansa Om(pic attached) is only initiated on Pushya Nakshatra and a pandit performs Pooja for purity! Image
As informed, virgin copper and tin are sourced. After manufacturing, regularly testing samples are sent to independent labs. Stringent tests like FDA & Cal Prop 65 compliant are done to ensure purity of highest standards and also allow exports (read bell pic description) ImageImage
Apart from stringent manufacturing & ethical controls, a lot of effort is made to innovate as per changing trends and cater to modern lifestyles... for ex, just for Diwali we make the Limited Edition Diwali Pooja Set... Image
The Deepawali Laxmi Pooja set has been designed keeping in mind all follies of a modern fast life! With rapid product upgrades & life filled with plastic products, there are few products in market that you can buy and pass on to generations! This is one such product! Image
Additionally to keep up with modern trends, apart from Traditional Thali Sets, we have designed a very unique 61pc dinner set complete with a hand-painted wooden box! It’s a super hit with the ultra-sophisticated people wanting to move back to organic way of life! ImageImage
In Thali Sets, we have introduced matte finish! So earlier when you bought the Thali set, it used to shine but after few years, it became matte with use! We do the matte finish on day one and give you! The polished option too is still there. Pics of both attached. ImageImage
Additionally, apart from Indian market, as foreign markets are explored, the need for bronze massagers emerged and we are supplying these to US, Australia & Europe! ImageImageImageImage
The exciting journey of being connected to our roots yet trying to find the market fit for current trends continues! The Kansa coffee mug shared earlier is also one such example and the reason for this thread! Will try to update as we progress! Image
