"Performative #Diversity" doesn't describe ineffective practices, but rather practices done ineffectively. It's an essential distinction that many folks in their haste to condemn shoddy work often overlook.
❌ "Unconscious bias trainings are performative diversity."
✔️ "Unconscious bias trainings, when one-off, not tied to business outcomes, not centered on actionable behavior change, and not followed by accountability efforts, become performative."
❌ "Corporate statements on social issues are performative diversity."
✔️ "Corporate statements on social issues, if not translated into business commitments on concrete timelines with real consequences for failure, become performative."
❌ "Hiring a VP of DEI is performative diversity."
✔️ "Hiring a VP of DEI but not providing them resources, headcount, decision-making power, and authority, all the while sandbagging their change efforts, is performative."
When we call out performative work, we need to ensure that we're not just telling leaders to abandon #Diversity, #Equity, and #Inclusion practices that aren't working. We need to push leaders to make sure their DEI practices WORK to measurably move the needle, new practice or not
Ensure that your efforts to hold leaders accountable stay laser-focused on that fact.

Let’s talk objective.

Within some of my talks I have heard the response: this isn’t an objective view. We need a more objective view on race and racism.

What does that even mean? It means you want a white view. It means you want a view that tells you “it isn’t that bad”.
It is based in the idea that no one with a marginalized view could be objective. It is based in the idea that the only people who have objective views are white, cis gendered, able bodied, heterosexual or rich… the very people who have no objectivity.
How can you be objective about something you have never experienced? You don’t even know what you don’t know. And you definitely couldn’t fathom what the experience is.

So stop saying you want objective when you mean dominant view point.

If you are White and posting about #AhmaudArbery and not also talking about Whiteness:
-What you will do to attack the systems Whiteness has in place
-Your involvement in said systems
-What you will do to attack policing systems that are covered in Whiteness
-How you will talk to your White friends about not only this instance, but also Whiteness
-How you will talk to your White kids about their Whiteness
-How you plan to start pushing the envelope on Whiteness at your job with your boss
-How you plan to not allow your White family members to say shitty things. This is the time to not allow for family or old age passes.
