17 new cases of COVID-19 announced in Nova Scotia today (Monday, May 31) /thread
All of the new cases are in Nova Scotia Health's Central Zone.
I mistyped so deleted a tweet. There are now 448 known active cases. This is fewer than at the peak of the first wave (when there were 466).
There are now 40 people in hospital with the disease, 16 of whom are in ICU.
Here is the graph of daily new cases and the 7-day rolling average (today at 33.4) since March 28, the last day of zero new cases: Image
And here is the active caseload since March 28: Image
I feel I need to point out that the decline in active cases also represents, in part, the death of 19 people since April 1.
Nova Scotia Health labs completed 3,781 PCR tests yesterday. This does not include the testing done at pop-up sites.
23,030 doses of vaccine were administered in total Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
As of end of day yesterday, 55.7% of the entire population has received at least one dose of vaccine: Image
It's hard to say for sure, but it looks like NS will hit 60% of the population with at least one dose — which is the Phase 2 requirement — on Wednesday, the same day Phase 1 is implemented.
Oh, 74 people are today considered newly recovered.
There is a COVID briefing scheduled to begin at 3pm, so I'll come back to this thread and continue it then.

I get an awful lot of people asking me questions, giving their point of views, etc. re COVID. It's really much appreciated! I can't respond to everyone but your input does get reflected in the reporting and questions.
And @MaryPCampbell points out that the press release today no longer says there is "limited community spread" in Sydney, but merely that, like the Northern and Western Zones, the Eastern Zone is merely being "closely monitored" for community spread.
While we're waiting for the briefing to begin, here's the daily new case count since the start of the pandemic in March 2020: Image
And here's the active caseload for the duration of the pandemic: Image
We're about to start.
Rankin: [gives native land acknowledgement, speaks to the mass grave discovered in BC]
Rankin: there is a new death (over and above the 5 reported over the weekend — this death is not yet in today's stats)
Rankin: "we are the envy of so many jurisdictions across the country"
Rankin: there are no new cases in Sydney, and over 8,000 asymptomatic tests were given in Halifax, and only 3 came back positive.
Rankin: with all this, schools in Sydney and HRM will reopen on Thursday.
[I'll step aside for a moment as Twitter explodes]
Rankin: there will be 58K doses of vaccine this week, and 75K next
Rankin: the travel restriction on HRM and Sydney is lifted effective Tuesday.
Rankin: starting tomorrow, some people will be notified for moving up their second dose.
Strang: "I fully expect we will see some cases in coming days" but "we're trending in the right direction"
Strang: given how quickly things are improving, I'm happy to say the in-provincial travel restrictions are lifted
Strang: yes, it's been confusing about schools. Thanks for being flexible.
Strang: on reopening, some people think we're being too cautious, and some people think we're not going fast enough. But we'll open on our schedule.
Strang: while one dose provides good protection, the Indian variant in particular requires 2 doses.
Strang: "once we're open, we want to stay open."
Strang: given how well things are going, I expect each phase will only last 2 weeks. We'll be in Phase 4 by mid-July, will be able to travel, have up to 25 people in our houses, restaurants open, sports going on, etc. (with some restrictions)
Strang: but in order to get there, we need to adhere to the whatever the restrictions are at the time.
Strang: People are asking why we are reopening so slowly. It's because people are still dying. Dr. Tam issued a warning asking provinces not to go too quickly.
Strang: another question is why we need to wait 2 weeks to move from from one stage to the next. That's because the incubation period is 2 weeks.
Another question is why can I hang out on a patio with 10 people but I can't go eat dinner with grandma? You can go eat at grandma's, if you are outside.
RANKIN CORRECTS HIMSELF: there is no additional death. 5, not 6, since Friday.
Strang: "schools are safe when our communities are safe."
Strang: even during the third wave, there were only a "handful" of cases of transmission in a classroom, and that was when there was significant disease out in the community.
Strang is again asked about vaccination status of the deceased and hospitalized. He says that data will be released later this week. He repeats, that some people with 2 doses will get sick, and some will die. That doesn't mean the vaccine doesn't work.
Asked abut AstraZeneca 2nd shots, Strang says he expects a NACI recommendation as early as tomorrow.
I asked about deaths arising out of the Halifax Infirmary non-COVID unit, and Dr. Strang says there has been one.
I also asked if, given the low number of daily cases, if they can get back to reporting the sources of infection — close contacts, travel, unknown. Strang said "he bring that back" for discussion.
I had a bunch more questions I could've asked, but only allowed the two.
The briefing is over. I'll have a full article in just a while.

I think I'm probably fairly typical in terms of Nova Scotians thinking about and acting on COVID precautions. I've been religious about masks, not getting close to people, staying home for all but important local trips, and, you know, not travelling.
I've never felt put-out by this. Of course it's somewhat painful, and limiting. But because most of us did this, we kept COVID mostly at bay, and when there were outbreaks, they were brought under control quickly. Yah us.
I've got family and loved ones (some are both :) ) in the US I miss immensely. I'm chopping at the bit to see them, but will wait, probably until very late this year, because that's what we do, right?

Today's COVID briefing is scheduled to start at 3pm. Typically, the daily case numbers come out right before, so I'll be live-tweeting them both on this thread.
2 more deaths announced.
The deceased are both men in their 60s, who lived in the Central Zone.
