There are more than 476 million indigenous people in the world, across 90 countries, representing 5,000 different cultures. They make up 6.2 percent of the global population and live in all geographic regions. (2/9)
Indigenous peoples represent the greater part of the world’s cultural diversity. They speak the major share of the world’s almost 7000 languages. It is estimated that an indigenous language dies every 2 weeks. (3/9)
Many Indigenous peoples continue to be confronted with marginalization, extreme poverty and other human rights violations. The life expectancy of Indigenous peoples is as much as 20 years lower than that of their non-Indigenous counterparts. (4/9)
Although many Indigenous peoples are self-governing, many still live under the authority of the central governments that control their land and resources. Despite this, Indigenous people have demonstrated excellent governance. (5/9)
Indigenous People manage 33% of forests holding 80% of the world’s biodiversity. Nearly 70 million depend on forests for livelihoods + live in harmony with nature—many are farmers + hunter gatherers. Recent analysis found 91% of their lands in “good” or “fair” condition. (6/9)
Indigenous People’s forestlands store at least one quarter of all above-ground tropical forest carbon, making them major contributors in the fight against climate change. (7/9)
Protecting the environment and tackling worldwide inequality cannot be achieved without the indigenous peoples. That’s why the theme this year is “leave no one behind.” #IndigenousPeoplesDay. (8/9)
