We should do less thinking of what China is doing to itself in the short-term and more of what they are trying to achieve long-term. Moves that appear to be bad right now may be hugely beneficial 5 years or more into the future. Some that appear good now could actually harm them
as these moves could impede progress. Reining in the tech sector to give Beijing time to put in regulations is likely positive, as platforms will have an even and clear playing field. Banning #cryptocurrency seems self-defeating now, but in the context of avoiding capital flight
that could destabilize the financial system later on and shutting down illicit flows from criminal activities, it is a positive. Launching a #CBDC in Feb opens up tighter surveillance and monitoring of people, but will bring in hundreds of millions of unbanked into the digital
economy. Upending the old business of high-stakes gambling that built Macau in the early 2000's in favor of more family-oriented experiences is a more sustainable model for the city going forward. Allowing #Evergrande to fail will hurt creditors in the short term, but also shake
off prevailing practice of buying property for speculation. No government wants that. Clamping down on private tutors & educators addresses current negative sentiment about cost of living among masses, but it risks producing less competitive graduates tomorrow. The move to limit
online gaming access for minors helps immediately address the growing addiction at an early age, but it will also prevent those capable of excelling in this new digital world from realizing their full potential (i.e. #esports influencers & future versions of Tencent/NetEase).
Beijing's policy of zero tolerance for COVID cases is causing disruptions to its economy. But what results could be a society that is far more conscious about health, cleanliness & hygiene than the one we saw before the pandemic struck. Even Chinese want to move on from all this.
