The WHO has released some key messages for today - #worldmentalhealthday who.int/campaigns/worl… /1
Here are my key messages, as frontline MH hcw worker /2
The mental health sector has been woefully under-resourced - this was the reality pre-pandemic /3
This means that those providing this work (allied health, medical, nursing) were already familiar with staffing shortages, skills shortages and the inability (as an individual) to change this - despite recognising and wanting to provide the best quality of care /4
What is needed is a recognition of the fact that mental and physical health are interconnected, and genuine effort to address the very real stigma around MH (in the community AND in the healthcare system - wrt funding and pandemic preparation) /5
This is especially relevant for hcw who, during this pandemic, are working in a system that was already stretched, that was already (at times) harmful, and which asks them to keep giving with less - and refers them to a phone help-line... /6
Working in an environment that doesn't afford physical safety (recognising #COVIDisAirborne #ventilation #PPE) also doesn't afford mental wellbeing. We know mind and body are connected. So looking after one, looks after the other - for hcws and the community /7
We need investment in MH services, particularly in areas that were most stretched prior to the pandemic (child and youth), and we need to keep an open mind as to future requirements for the community as we learn more about MH sequalae from #COVID19 itself + likelihood of PTSD /8
