Senior Conservative MP Sir Geoffrey Clifton Brown (Treasurer of the 22) tells @faisalislam “If Lord Geidt feels he’s been misled he’s fully entitled to resign.” Then says if he does resign it’ll need to be investigated, potentially by a senior judge. #Newsnight
Clifton Brown on both the alleged party and the Downing St flat: “What we need is a really straightforward version of events from the Prime Minister on all of these issues ...all of these things need to be investigated and the truth must come out.”
Clifton Brown says the party issue could have been sorted in a day or two. “If there were gatherings the appropriate disciplinary actions should have been taken. The Prime Minister needs to get a grip on all of these matters.” #Newsnight

Yesterday we approached Mr Slack via his new employers at The Sun to ask whether he had been at the alleged party. He said he wouldn’t be commenting.
We’d been told by several sources that this was a gathering of staff mainly from private and press offices (Mr Slack was then PM’s spokesman).
One way or another it was a busy night in No 10 that night- we’re told lots of key members of staff were at a Covid-O meeting until 2130.

So much political news but this should not be missed. Eye watering NHS waiting times. New figs:

🔵 Number waiting for non-emergency NHS treatment in England has risen to *6 million*- the highest since records began 15 years ago.

🔵 35% now waiting >18 weeks to start treatment
IFS says latest numbers equate to 140,000 people being added to the list in just one month. Over 1.5m more than pre-pandemic (when waiting lists were already bad).
Not helped by ongoing discharge crisis for social care. New data shows there were 10500 patients in hospitals last week “who no longer needed to be in hospital but were not discharged that day.” That’s more than 1 in 10 beds. A lot of that will be down to lack of Dom care places.

NEW: Electoral Commission fines the Conservative Party £17800 after failing to accurately report a donation and keep a proper account. The party failed to report £67k donation from Huntswood in October 2020. £52k was connected to the costs of refurbishment of PM’s Downing St flat
The Commission also concluded that the reference in the party’s financial records to the payment of £52,801.72 made by the party for the refurbishment was not accurate. Commission says party had “serious failings” in their compliance systems.
Louise Edwards, Elec Comm: “As a large and well-resourced political party that employs compliance and finance experts... the Conservative Party should have sufficiently robust systems in place to meet its legal reporting requirements.”

NEW: Allegra Stratton has resigned.
Stratton has given a resignation statement on the steps of her home, in tears.
"My remarks seemed to make light of the rules. Rules which people were doing everything to obey. That was never my intention. I will regret those remarks for the rest of my days. I offer my profound apologies to all of you at home for them."

So on the face of it a change of tone from the PM. He apologises and says he's sickened by seeing staff joking about a party.

But then says he continues to be assured there wasn't a party. So if there wasn't a party, Q is it why is it sickening to be joking about it?
The emphasis on "was repeatedly assured" seems to be key. Leaves open possibility for BJ to say if it turns out there was one that he was lied to. He's essentially put a massive crosshair on his staff. Risky.
No 10 strategy clear- give it to Case, with an unspecified deadline and hope the temperature lessens. Q is whether it works, not least as a result of the lack of clarity over PM's answers, suggestion of other parties, Q of what police do and the very volatile politics.
