A thread…After a couple weeks of reading and watching the discourse on Twitter regarding the #freedomconvoy and #Ontag farmers I feel compelled to add my thoughts…
There’s a lot to unpack here so bear with me… First of all I take issue with the argument that our freedoms are being infringed upon. As #Canadian citizens we all have a duty to follow laws that uphold our society. Vaccine mandates are no different…
We all had to have our vaccines up to date to attend public school and nobody complained then, it was widely recognized that it was for our own benefit and to protect everyone around us. Why is it any different now? Nobody is being forced to take a vaccine…
You simply loose privileges if you choose not to be vaccinated. It’s no different then loosing your license if you drink and drive.
I understand that everyone is tired of #lockdowns. I am too! But I trust the medical experts who are trying to avoid overwhelming hospitals. It’s an impossible and thankless balancing act. I can’t understand those who claim that the government is doing this as part of some…
Conspiracy to control the general public. What politician in a free democracy would put measures in place that generally piss off the entire voting population if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. It’s a ludicrous idea.
As far as my view of #Ontag farmers joining these protests, I think this is doing tremendous and long lasting harm to the general publics view and trust of farmers. I saw someone else’s tweet about how farmers would feel if they had protestors lined up in front of their farms…
I thought that was spot on, these same farmers who are protesting would be livid if protestors showed up in front of their barns or fields to protest animal rights or the use of GMO crops. If we are not careful we are going to end up in a boy who cried wolf scenario…
When an issue comes up that legitimately does justify a farmer protest nobody will take us seriously. With the exception of the challenges around temporary foreign workers, by and large agriculture has been one of the least affected industries by covid.
At the end of the day everyone still needs to eat, our business have not faced nearly the hardships that the restaurant industry has, commodity prices are at record highs and yields across Ontario have been excellent.
In closing I agree that we need to get things opened up as soon as possible, the toll on everyone’s mental health and on the social development of young kids is real. But opposing vaccination mandates and vaccination in general is only prolonging this pandemic. Cheers everyone
I wanted to add that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of farmers that have commented and reached out in support. I honestly didn’t think there were as many farmers out there sharing similar perspectives. It’s been refreshing!
