With an election looming it’s little wonder that the Morrison Government has tried to use the Budget to improve its standing with Australian women, who have been abandoning the Liberals in droves. But this ain’t it. #Budget2022 #auspol 🧵1/15
While some announcements are a step in the right direction, the budget is largely a grab bag of bare-minimum measures that fall well short of what we know is needed to make women safe and ensure their economic security. #Budget2022 #auspol 2/15
Funding to address gendered violence is well short of what women’s orgs say is needed. The Greens have committed to the sector’s call for $1 bn pa for frontline DV services, because it's unconscionable to underfund services which stop women being killed. #Budget2022 #auspol 3/15
While awareness raising and training is crucial, it should be additional to, rather than instead of, the frontline and specialist services that are needed to meet the shortfall in support for women & children fleeing domestic and family violence. #Budget2022 #auspol 4/15
The govt’s so-called ‘enhanced’ PPL plan doesn’t increase payments, doesn’t add super & does nothing to incentivize shared care. In fact it may have the perverse effect of leading mothers to take all 20 weeks of parenting leave with fathers taking none. #Budget2022 #auspol 5/15
Under the Greens’ 26-week PPL plan payments would match salaries up to $100k, super would be added, and ‘use it or lose it’ incentives built in to encourage shared parenting. #Budget2022 #auspol 6/15
The $100 m promised for crisis, transition and affordable housing is pitifully small compared to the $7.6 billion investment the sector says is needed to provide emergency and permanent housing for women, particularly older women at risk of homelessness. #Budget2022 #auspol 7/15
The much-trumpeted expansion of the Family Home Guarantee is no help because it will simply increase house prices and encourage people to get into debts that they cannot service. #Budget2022 #auspol 8/15
The govt has also shown a stunning lack of commitment to addressing violence against First Nations women. Instead of a dedicated, standalone National Plan to End Violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women... #Budget2022 #auspol 9/15
... they’re saying there will be a First Nations ‘action plan’ sitting under the overarching National Plan. That is clearly not what First Nations groups have called for. #Budget2022 #auspol 10/15
They’ve also baked in real cuts to community controlled First Nations family violence services over the forward estimates, and delivered no funding at all for the sector’s peak body. #Budget2022 #auspol 11/15
This Budget will not close the gender pay gap. Childcare is still not free, care work is still undervalued & the minimum wage & income support payments are still too low. This Budget will not deliver economic security for women. #Budget2022 #auspol 12/15
We welcome the additional $$ for the Human Rights Commission to monitor Respect at Work recs, but this is undermined by broader cuts to the HRC budget & the fact that there is still no commitment to a positive duty on employers to make workplaces safe. #Budget2022 #auspol 13/15
Women have spent a decade trying to convince this govt to take their safety & economic security seriously, but instead of action they’ve been served up talkfests & Cabinet reshuffles by a toxic govt that treats women as a PR problem to be managed. #Budget2022 #auspol 14/15
This was the PM’s last opportunity to stand up for Australian women. Once again he failed because he's a sexist dinosaur - it’s long past time to give him and his boys’ club the boot. #Budget2022 #auspol 15/15

The AEC has published political donations data for the 2020-21 fin yr today (better late than never, but it should be in real time!). Let’s see which dodgy corporations have been lining whose pockets, shall we? (thread) #auspol
The biggest donor of the year goes to billionaire Anthony Pratt of the Visy recycling empire for giving the Libs $1.26 Million. Pratt is mates with Trump & Morrison.
Empire Energy, who got $21 million in public money to frack the NT’s Beetaloo Basin for dirty gas, gave $40k to Libs & $25k to NT Labor. Empire’s Chair has personally previously donated over $200K to the LNP. Pretty good return on investment 🙄 #auspol

The Greens today will move for an independent inquiry into Christian Porter’s fitness to be a Minister. 1/9 #auspol #ChristianPorter
For two months now I have been fighting to progress my bill that would set up an independent inquiry into Christian Porter’s fitness to be a Minister and uphold the parliamentary standards that the PM is meant to apply. 2/9 #auspol #ChristianPorter
At every turn I have been blocked by the government and their One Nation lackeys. Today I will again seek to progress the bill by referring it to Senate committee for inquiry, as is the norm for private members bills. 3/9 #auspol #ChristianPorter

More Senate bastardry from big parties - gave late verbal notice that 2moro they’ll gang up to PERMANENTLY REMOVE the rights of Senators to move & get a vote on issues in ‘motions’. This is deeply anti-democratic; means LibLab get to dictate issues that can be voted on! #auspol
The LibLab proposal is to replace actual votes with 2min statements. Problem is, votes are where the accountability is! Big parties want to weasel out of telling the public what their position is on issues that might be tricky/politically inconvenient. But ppl deserve to know!
Senate motions are not just an important accountability mechanism to hold parties to account (eg do you support new coal mines or not? What about 2030 targets?), they have also sparked important policy reforms. The banking royal commission: started because of a Greens motion.

Mr Porter abandoning his defamation action against @Milliganreports and the ABC leaves serious allegations against him unexamined. 1/8 #auspol #ChristianPorter
The Australian people cannot have confidence in this government while a man with a rape allegation hanging over his head remains a Cabinet Minister. 2/8 #auspol #ChristianPorter
In March, I presented a petition from the March 4 Justice rally to parliament. More than 90,000 people were calling for, among other things, an independent investigation into Mr Porter’s fitness as a Minister. 3/8 #auspol #ChristianPorter

Big day in #estimates today. I found out from AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw that the Brittany Higgins investigation had received 32 referrals of information to their investigation, and the AFP are actively pursuing six matters. 1/7
During my questioning of the Secretary of the Department of Parliamentary Services we learned that there had been no changes to parliamentary security protocols since Brittany Higgins’ allegations came to light. 2/7 #estimates
We also learned that a review of security procedures and policies - some of which haven’t been updated since the early 2000s! - had been started in early 2018 but had not yet recommended any changes to security guard duty of care. 3/7 #estimates

Greens women will walk out of the senate on Monday as part of the national #MarchForJustice protests, which are calling for gender equality and an end to gendered violence. We'll join demonstrators at the Canberra rally on the lawns outside Parliament House. @womensmarchaus 1/4
These last few weeks have made every woman in the country angry, sad and exhausted. The government’s reaction to allegations of sexual assault in Parliament House and allegations of rape against the Attorney-General have left us disgusted and fed up. #March4Justice 2/4
The PM has made it clear that he doesn’t believe women, will only think about the impact on us when his wife reminds him of it, and will go to any length to protect his mates. #March4Justice 3/4
