As more atrocity sites are discovered in 🇺🇦 following the ouster of 🇷🇺 occupation forces, we can anticipate that the “denial stage” of Russia’s campaign will follow a familiar pattern. Again, I think Serb nationalist negationism of the Bosnian Genocide is instructive. 🧵
Despite the chaotic scenes in Bucha, the first step of this process has already taken place out of view. 🇷🇺 forces have already taken steps to obscure the extent of their mass killings. Expect (variously effectively) concealed mass graves to be discovered in coming days/weeks.
It’s possible that in areas along the Belarus/Russia border, persons & bodies will actually have been transported across the border to be killed/buried there. The Milosevic regime did this both during the Bosnian Genocide and Kosovo in Serbia proper. balkaninsight.com/2015/04/23/ser…
The “quality” of the burial sites will also vary depending on how much time the perpetrators had to do their work. The longer the occupation, the more organized and/or concealed the burial sites are going to be. There’s not going to be a consistent model.
Secondly, Russian govt/media will insist that any apparent civilian deaths are fabrications. This is crude but effective propaganda that will buy the regime more time to come up w/ more coherent narratives. This will co-exist w/ claims that the numbers are (grossly) inflated.
It will also co-exist w/ claims that any actual civilian deaths were “false flag” attacks by the UA govt, i.e. they attacked their own people. This is the go-to claim by SRB nationalists viz the Markale massacre(s), ditto the 1995 Tuzla massacre.
As the scale of the killings becomes impossible to dispute, they’ll shift to claiming that those killed were actually active combatants, not civilians and/or POWs. This remains the standard issue line viz the Srebrenica Genocide by SRB nationalists. One example below already.
A particular variation will also admit to (some portion of) the killings but claim that they were “justified reprisals” for still “greater” atrocities committed by UA forces. Again, this is a standard SRB nationalist talking pt re: the Srebrenica Genocide.
Finally, watch also for atrocity glorification to co-exist w/ denial. Perpetrators will have recorded/photographed the killings and/or the results. Extremist Russian media will publish examples of this too. Glorification will likely increase w/ time as it has in Serbia.
In this context, it’s also likely some actual evidence of mass killing will be falsely portrayed as Ukrainian atrocities by Russian media. They’ll do this intentionally to confuse international media/perception. We’ve seen this in Syria most recently, also amplified by RUS media.
Throughout this entire process, Western “anti-imperialist” figures will be & are critical nodes in disseminating disinformation, denial, & negationist narratives. They’ll do the heavy lifting in skewing perceptions among folks in the U.S., EU et al. Again, cf. Syria.
It’s important that we anticipate. They are already doing this, they will continue. They will have some success. But if we prepare for it & organize sustained counter disinfo campaigns, we can check their efforts. The work of @SrebrenicaMC & @SrebrenicaUK is instructive.
In short, concealment/denial are the final stage of atrocities. The situation in Ukraine remains fluid but we cannot pretend like we don’t know where this is going. Moreover, we should expect mass killings to continue. It’s why NATO must continue to arm UA to prevent these. /x

It’s important that any “peace deal” Russia supposedly agrees to in Ukraine - other than full capitulation - be recognized by NATO as only a temporary ceasefire. Ukrainians know this already. But many in the West will trip over themselves to take the murderous Putin at his word.
Until his war effort in UA is wholly defeated, incl the liberation of the entirety of the occupied Donbas & Crimea, Putin will merely be seeking space to reconstitute his forces until the nxt round of aggression. His ouster is necessary (if insufficient) for peace in Europe.
Even when Putin departs - one way or another - we are likely to be left w/ a Russia dominated by militant nationalist tendencies. That may change in time. But it will take yrs, and we need to be prepared for a generational struggle against Russian neo-imperialist tendencies.

We really need to talk about the @Europarl_EN Foreign Affairs Committee meeting on Bosnia & Herzegovina yesterday. In particular, the inexplicable & shameful platforming of hate speech by @davidmcallister. What he allowed warrants censure @RobertaMetsola. europeanwesternbalkans.com/2022/03/16/bih…
No one is surprised that Kremlin-backed secessionist & genocide denier Milorad Dodik used his time to lie, obfuscate & belittle the Bosniak community of BiH & to spin revisionist yarns about the nature of the war & aggressions vs. BiH in the 1990s. That's just Dodik.
Nor is anyone surprised that his lil buddy @Dragan_Covic, another RUS asset & one who has been blocking FBiH govt formation for 4yrs, used similar language w/ respect to the Bosniak community, while lying through his teeth about the state of constitutional & elxns reform in BiH.

Sensible Western governments would devote resources today to prepare for the collapse of the Putin regime and the almost certain chaos that will befall Russia as a result. And that implosion is coming, I suspect, sooner than many believe.
He’s 69. He’s been in power for two decades. What’s left unlooted of the RUS economy is collapsing, the country is internationally isolated, he’s fighting a desperate, losing war w/ no coherent exit strategy, RUS citizens are revolting, and he has no credible heir.
What comes after is highly unlikely to be any kind of functional democratic regime. In fact we should expect a reconstituted authoritarian regime in Russia — but that process of reconstitution is likely to be volatile & violent. Think Egypt post-2013 but w/ nuclear implications.

Hasan & Scahill co-opting Russia’s aggression in Ukraine to spin revisionist yarns re: 1999 NATO campaign vs Milosevic’s regime reminds us the “anti-imperialist” left doesn’t do solidarity. Instead they exploit atrocities according to whether they advance their ideological aims.
They will invoke Yemen, for instance, only to use it as a cudgel against “American imperialism”. As that’s not rationally possible in Bosnia, Kosovo, Syria & Ukraine, they either explicitly paint victims & survivors as “imperial” stooges or they engage in banal whataboutism.
But the aim is the same. It’s to center the U.S. & West more broadly as uniquely evil & as exclusively responsible for everything ill in the world. In the process the agency of both atrocity victims & perpetrators is erased, bc the West alone is the author of all global politics.

The Soviet model of imperialism saw Moscow controlling entire states as puppet regimes. The post-Soviet Kremlin has used breakaway territories w/in sovereign states to the same effect. In Ukraine, however, we’ve seen a dangerous new mutation of this strategy.
In 2014, Russia occupied large swathes of Ukraine and created two faux-republics, while formally annexing Crimea. Now it has used the existence of the LPR/DPR - specifically their purported “defense” - as justification for the wholesale conquest of Ukraine.
Today, we saw Lukashenko share a map that appeared to show Russia’s intentions to expand its war to another country, Moldova, likely on the basis of its own Kremlin-aligned breakaway territory, Transnistria. Belarus itself appears to have undergone a “quiet annexation” by Moscow.

Countering 🇷🇺 influence in 🇧🇦 by working for a HDZ-aligned think tank (whose ldr bemoaned “lack of Russian influence in BiH” to 🇷🇺 media on visit to Moscow in 2020) which also publishes txts by a man who in 2015, a yr post-Crimea, called for an “alliance” btw BiH Croats & Russia.
Also, as we all know, all great political reforms have been based [checks notes] on “the domains of public electricity companies”.

Jesus, please, take the wheel.
I know I posted about this article three hours ago already but I haven’t stopped laughing since. The entire “hook” of this txt is “Herceg-Bosna but it’s actually Elektroprivreda HZ HB”. It was cruel of the editors to have let these kids impale themselves in this fashion. C’mon.
