As a gay Michigander & a State Senator, I’ve been heartened by how many people are standing up for our #LGBTQ youth.
The many recent retweets amplify our message: we are fighting for #equality. Now it’s time to elevate that with action.
🧵Here’s how you can help our community:
We need to show all Michigan legislators that our #LGBTQ community and allies exist in ALL legislative districts and are demanding action on #equality legislation.
My Senate Bill 208/Rep. @lpohutsky19’s House Bill 4297 to ensure MI’s Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act protects #LGBTQ Michiganders from discrimination.
No one in MI should be fired, evicted, or denied services based on who they are and how they identify.
Sen. @Adamant4Detroit’s SB 967 to include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes in Michigan’s hate crime statute.
Trans women of color are especially vulnerable within our community and we need to more tools to take on hate.
Sen. @rosemarybayer’s SB 763 & Rep. @lpohutsky19’s HB 5590 to eliminate the gay and trans panic defense in Michigan. #LGBTQ people are not lesser victims of crimes just because of who they are.
Our work as @MISenDems to repeal the law that Michigan Republicans passed in 2015 that could prevent #LGBTQ parents from adopting children in Michigan.
Support the good work at Equality Michigan that helps fund anti-violence and advocacy work for the #LGBTQ and HIV affected communities: equalitymi.org/donate/
And @HRC is on the ground organizing for #equality in Michigan — follow @HRC_MI.
Donate to out political candidates! We belong in every room where decisions about us are being made. Our community has PACs to support our candidates and causes.
Support our legal teams! Sometimes a lawsuit is our most effective action to combat hate. Follow the important work at @lambdalegal and @ACLU.
Our local @ACLUofMichigan brought the suit on behalf of our late friend Aimee Stephens that led to the historic Bostock decision.
#Pride season is coming up in June! Go have a day of fun (@dananessel and I sure did last year) and sign up to help one or more of the many organizations with booths at Pride seeking volunteers the other 11 months of the year.
Follow and support the incredible work at @FairMichigan, which has successfully prosecuted some 35 people with capital crimes. fairmichigan.org

#Stonewall was 51 years ago today, yet MI's GOP-led legislature can't even #RecognizeMIPride. They refused to bring my resolution recognizing #PrideMonth to a vote — for the 6th year in a row. But that won’t stop us from recognizing #LGBTQ history ourselves. THREAD: ⬇️ 1/ #mileg
#Stonewall didn't happen in a vacuum, so let’s back up. During the post-WWII Cold War, anti-communist paranoia was high. The 1950s Red Scare was our govt’s witch-hunt to root out suspected communists...& other "subversives." You can guess where this is going. #RecognizeMIPride 2/
#LGBTQ people were considered mentally ill & subversive to society & the family. As they gained visibility, they also became subjects of FBI surveillance under the assumption they were vulnerable to blackmail due to their identities & would help communists. #RecognizeMIPride 3/
In just 13 days, we’ve gone from 0 to 1,232 confirmed cases in Michigan of the #coronavirus#COVID19. It has doubled over the weekend. This virus is spreading exponentially.
From @GovWhitmer: We have roughly 10 million people in Michigan. There is a model that anticipates that if we stay on our current trajectory, just like Italy, over 70 percent of our people could get infected with #COVID19.
.@GovWhitmer: Of that 7 million people projected, about a million would need to be hospitalized. For perspective: we have about 25,000 acute care beds in Michigan.
Stopping the spread of #coronavirus is the most important tool we have right now to keep our communities safe.
In the no-fault “compromise,” healthcare execs have wins & losses, insurance execs have wins & losses, trial lawyers have wins & losses. And they’ll all be just fine.
But the most vulnerable - the catastrophically injured - ONLY have losses. 1/
Today I voted for those accident victims, and I spoke about that on the Senate floor two weeks ago. 2/
