On Jan. 6, 2021, supporters of former President Trump launched a deadly attack on American democracy — and we’ve been using public records requests at federal, state, and local level to expose what happened. #FOIAFriday
We obtained and published records that include top DOJ officials’ call logs from Jan. 6, including a handwritten log that appears to document then acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen’s calls. americanoversight.org/american-overs…
Phil Waldron, a retired Army colonel, recently told news outlets that he circulated a PowerPoint presentation outlining plans for preventing the election’s certification and used it during briefings on Capitol Hill in the days before Jan. 6.
nytimes.com/2021/12/10/us/…
We uncovered records of Waldron’s communications with state leaders conducting
unnecessary and partisan “audits” of 2020 election results.
washingtonpost.com/investigations…
Text communications we obtained show Arizona Senate President Karen Fann consulted Waldron when hiring Cyber Ninjas for the widely discredited “audit” of votes cast in Maricopa County.
documentcloud.org/documents/2106…
Other records we obtained include additional communications of Waldron with Arizona Senate leaders as well as evidence of his contact with several prominent proponents of the Big Lie and election-overturning schemes, including lawyer John Eastman.
americanoversight.org/election-denie…
Secret Service records we obtained show that on the morning of Jan. 6, a Secret Service alert said some people arriving at the “Save America” rally were “wearing ballistic helmets, body armor and carrying radio equipment and military-grade backpacks.”
documentcloud.org/documents/2109…
Our team pulled all of these records together, along with public reporting and the Pentagon’s published timeline, to create a detailed timeline of the attack and the federal response. americanoversight.org/timeline-jan6
We will keep investigating the Jan. 6 attack — the failures that led up to it, the groups and individuals who fomented it, and the actions of key leaders that day — and we’ll post the documents we uncover online.

NEW: The Arizona Senate released more documents in response to our ongoing lawsuit for records related to its partisan “audit.” The records, previously held by Cyber Ninjas, reveal new details about the firm’s split from subcontractor Wake TSI.
americanoversight.org/cyber-ninjas-e…
Wake TSI was initially hired by Cyber Ninjas in the spring of 2021 to lead the ballot count in Arizona, but in May did not renew its contract. (Wake TSI had also been hired to conduct a partisan post-election audit in Fulton County, Pa.)
An email from May 7, 2021, shows that Cyber Ninjas CEO Doug Logan took issue with the amount that Wake had been paying some “audit” workers and with the firm’s lack of transparency around those payments.

NEW: The Arizona Senate released more documents in response to our ongoing lawsuit for records related to its partisan “audit.” The records, previously held by Cyber Ninjas, reveal new details about the role partisan fundraisers played in the "audit."
americanoversight.org/cyber-ninjas-e…
On April 6, 2022, someone with the initials “f k” emailed Cyber Ninjas CEO Doug Logan and Joe Flynn, a director of Sidney Powell’s group Defending the Republic and a board member of America’s Future. Both groups fundraised for the “audit.”

“The four of us need to chat re OEW,” said the email, potentially referring to an “election integrity” initiative Flynn had announced.

Today’s Jan. 6 hearing will focus on how Donald Trump pressured Mike Pence to not count lawful electoral votes, including the role of lawyer John Eastman.

Here’s what we’ve uncovered about Eastman through our Jan. 6 investigation.
After the 2020 election, Trump-allied lawyer John Eastman outlined a six-step scheme in which former Vice President Mike Pence would throw out the valid electors from the “7 states [that] have transmitted dual slates of electors.”
Trump supporters in seven states did submit phony electoral vote certificates to Congress as part of their effort to overturn the 2020 election results.

We know this because we obtained the fake certificates via FOIA.

The office of Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has reportedly conducted official business using Wickr, a messaging app that can be set to delete messages after a set period of time.

We’ve filed a suite of public records requests to investigate.
americanoversight.org/investigation/…
The @washingtonpost obtained Wickr messages in which Hogan discussed issues such as the state’s Covid-19 response. Hogan’s office reportedly communicated through a Wickr network with timers for the destruction of messages set for 24 hours after being read.
washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/…
Hogan has argued that Wickr messages are not subject to public records laws.

Some lawmakers disagree. In Feb, they introduced a bill that would curtail the use of messages that self-destruct, or at least allow such messages to come to light.

BREAKING: A Wisc. court has now issued a written decision and order that the state Assembly’s Office of Special Counsel — which is conducting a partisan review of the 2020 election — is in contempt.
americanoversight.org/document/compl… Image
Today’s written order follows last Friday’s holding from Judge Frank Remington in our ongoing lawsuit seeking to uncover records from the 2020 election review led by Michael Gableman.
Today’s order instructs Michael Gableman, the attorney in charge of the OSC, to submit proof that he complied with the court’s previous order to search for and produce records that we requested under Wisconsin’s public records law.

Prior to the 2020 election, several top Trump administration officials went on politicized trips to promote Trump’s policies.

Records we’ve obtained show taxpayers paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for the problematic trips.
Former acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf traveled to swing states to tout Trump’s policies in the months before the 2020 election. Taxpayers paid $223,652 for Wolf’s trips to Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Texas.

Records we previously obtained also showed that trips to swing states ahead of the 2020 election by former EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler and former Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia cost taxpayers nearly $60,000 in staff travel and expenses.
