Every year when the July 4 holiday weekend comes around, I go through my peds emergency med list of what I hope that maybe this year I won’t see, unlike in years past -

A short🧵-
All the burns -
- on the bottoms of kids’ bare feet from stepping on discarded still hot BBQ charcoal briquets
- on hands and in eyes from wayward sparks from home fireworks & sparklers
- painfully blistered sunburns from forgetting to reapply sunscreen
- a drowning (or more) from a pool party where everyone thought someone *else was keeping an eye on the kids
- an overheated child forgotten in a hot car, sometimes too late
- food poisoning thanks to the picnic spread being left outside for too long
- too many severe motor vehicle crashes, often where the child wasn’t properly secured in a car seat/booster
So-
Please-
• leave the fireworks to the professionals
• remember that grills are hot, dangerous,& very interesting to toddlers
• assign a water watcher
• make sure kids are in approved flotation vests
• use the right car seat correctly, every time
• leave your phone or something else in the back seat of the car next to the car seat, or turn on the child reminder on the navigation app as a way to help remember that you’ve got a back seat passenger. And keep doors locked in the driveway so curious kids can’t get in.
Maybe this year I won’t encounter these things; that would be amazing.

But I have to go through my list, just in case this year is like every one that precedes it, where I’ve seen them all. Again and again.
/end.
