Five dead and 25 injured at a gay bar last night and Chaya Raichik is gloating about getting under the skin of LGBTQ people and targeting other orgs in Colorado. This woman is a psychopath, she's emboldened by the changes at twitter, and she's extremely dangerous.
There's a thing that public figures - even vehemently anti-gay ones - do after a tragedy like this where they signal that this was too far. It's how they communicate that there are guardrails in a society.
But Chaya Raichik is not a public figure. She is a troll and a terrorist elevated by an algorithm that prioritizes engagement above human life. She hides behind a keyboard and gloats at the pain of the LGBTQ community.
Twitter has had many opportunities to do something about this. In an interview I gave to CBC, I said that the language used by Libs of TikTok was going to lead to somebody getting killed.
Twitter's new owner seems to find her terribly funny, though, and is addicted to losing money, so I have no hope that Twitter will heed the warnings of experts and remove Libs of TikTok from this app - especially when they just reinstated Trump.
So I hope that Chaya is watching Alex Jones real closely. Because that's where she's headed. I feel sick thinking about what is going to happen before that point. But that's where it ends.

The New York Times publishing its third magazine-length piece this year where reporters new to covering trans people presents “too much medical care” as a representative problem facing the community and laments that more doctors or activists weren’t willing to speak to them.
The piece acknowledges that less than 1000 people a year are getting puberty blockers covered by insurance for gender dysphoria. Surely by now every one of them has been interviewed by a shiny reporter looking to build their career on the backs of this community.
If the Times is concerned about bone density, why not talk to a trans adult who’s had a orchiectomy whose hormones are no longer available under Medicaid in Florida? If they’re concerned about permanent changes, why not talk to trans adults denied medical interventions in youth?
I got to watch a focus group on trans issues with independent voters this summer. When shown a political ad presenting trans people in sports as a serious issue, they laughed. I’ve wondered since then if GOP strategists were seeing different results. Maybe they never tested.
This guy’s group has lit tens of millions of dollars of donor money on fire in three elections in a row now. I hope that now the political press is ready to stop taking him seriously.
Before the polls even closed on Tuesday, right-wing pundits like Matt Walsh and Chris Rufo confidently predicted a Democratic wipeout driven by a national repudiation of LGBTQ equality. Oops!
I am well-aware of the pitfalls in emphasizing "firsts," but I do think that it's worth noting how many communities responded to an unprecedented national campaign of demonization by choosing openly LGBTQ people to represent them. There were a lot of bright spots on Tuesday.
The dust has not yet settled from the 2022 midterms, but one thing is clear: attacking LGBTQ people is not a silver bullet for winning much of anything more than additional subscribers to the Daily Wire.
New: In Arizona, Republican candidate Kari Lake's closing message is the most vile, desperate attack I have seen. With the help of the Daily Wire and Charlie Kirk, she's attacking Katie Hobbs for the crime of being married to a trauma therapist with a trans patient.
I cannot exaggerate how despicable this attack from Kari Lake is. Are therapists now supposed to refuse care to trans people? Sick, twisted, and pathetic. She should never show her face in public for the rest of her life.
@lawton_sophie I cover right wing media narratives about LGBTQ people for a living. It takes a lot to shock me. But this did. Think for a moment of the implications of attacking a trauma therapist for even working with a trans person. They are not even hiding that they would prefer that we die.
Right-wing media have focused obsessively on drag shows in recent months, falsely claiming that they represent a threat to children, and to civilization, and that mere political action is not enough to stop them.
After a report from drag queen expert Chris Rufo last week fearmongering about drag story hour over B-roll of a fully-clothed drag queen dancing, Tucker Carlson said his viewers "should definitely arm themselves."
This is not subtle.
The same week, teenage pregnancy defender Matt Walsh compared drag shows to cancer, arguing that “just like cancer, stopping it is not a gentle or a painless process. The farther along the cancer is, the more aggressive you have to be in fighting it.”
Libs of TikTok is back from another suspension and immediately found a new children's hospital to go after for providing best-practice gender-affirming healthcare.
It's worth watching the clip that Chaya shared. The framing is slightly clunky but here are two parents saying that their child said that she wanted to die and be brought back as a girl. This is exactly who gender-affirming care is for.
Lucy Tidd's parents were able to revive their nine-year old's will to live by letting her grow out her hair and change her name. It takes a special kind of evil person to have a problem with that.
