NEW: Ford government's health spending is $859 million less than expected in first half of 2022-23, according to Ontario's budget watchdog. "That underspending is what actually created the crisis we have in our ERs today," says Liberal finance critic @stephaniebowman. #onpoli
"Pediatric ICUs are overwhelmed. Surgeries are being cancelled. Families with sick children are waiting upwards of 10 hours for care," says @CFifeKW, adding it's "unconscionable" the Ford gov't is shortchanging health care funding by $859 million in the middle of a crisis #onpoli
#breaking an Ontario court has ruled Bill 124 "infringes on the rights to freedom of association & collective bargaining." The law capped raises for public sector workers at 1% a year. Healthcare workers have demanded the Ford gov't repeal the bill to attract & retain staff.
"The bill has done incalculable harm to our healthcare system & other public services ," says @MikeSchreiner. He's demanding the Ford government not appeal the court's decision. “Doug Ford must not waste any more taxpayer money fighting for this terrible piece of legislation."
The Ford government plans to appeal the decision. A reminder that overturning Bill 124 could cost the government $8.4 billion over 5 years. A thread on that here: #onpoli
Despite spending $859 million less than expected, the Ford gov’t says it’s making historic investments in health. But Ontario’s budget watchdog says those “historic” investments are par for the course & not sufficient to cover healthcare costs. Full story: toronto.citynews.ca/video/2022/11/…

This is so damning. In his ruling on Bill 124, the justice found Ontario was not facing a financial situation that justified an infringement of Charter rights- in fact he found the Ford government didn’t provide a rationale at all for needing the legislation to cut costs (1/3) -
"Ontario hasn't explained why it was necessary to infringe on constitutional rights to impose wage constraints at the same time as it was providing tax cuts or license plate sticker refunds that were more than 10x larger than the savings obtained from wage restraints." (2/3)
After all these years, countless protests, workers leaving the health sector in droves, he found there was no justification at all for Bill 124. So many of its reportedly dire effects could have been avoided. (3/3)

#BREAKING Adamson BBQ owner Adam Skelly was just taken away in handcuffs #adamsonbarbecue
Adamson BBQ owner Adam Skelly arrested at 12:25pm today, here’s another angle. He has a big smile on his face as he’s taken away by police. #adamsonbarbeque #adamsonbarbecue
Update from police on Adam Skelly’s arrest: he had been advised not to enter the restaurant, he attempted to anyways & pushed through police- at that point he was handcuffed for trespassing. He’s facing 4 new charges and will be held in custody overnight. Bail hearing tomorrow.

The owner of Adamson BBQ vowed to reopen at 11am today- but police have changed the locks so he can’t get in. He’s put out a call for a locksmith & his supporters have returned for day 3. We’re standing by at the scene. I count at least 20 officers here. #adamsonbarbeque
It’s past 11am and Adamson BBQ remains closed. Police have blocked the road here, so a delivery truck with food for the restaurant can’t get through. The owner’s supporters are carrying it to the restaurant to hand out in the parking lot. #adamsonbbq
More police & more people arriving to Adamson BBQ, which remains closed after police changed the locks. Supporters have set up a stage with speakers in the parking lot, where they’re chanting absurdities like “the pandemic isn’t real.” A far cry from simply supporting a business
