These “Safaris in Trumpland” are no infuriating and borderline racist. #Thread theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
1. They are not a way to overcome the gap with “the internal other” but to explain them (away).
2. They often lead to whitewashing nativism, populism and racism and sometimes even adopting it.
3. They also reinforce the stereotypes of both sides: urban liberals versus rural conservatives.
4. Obviously, you can find many stereotypical liberals in “the Heartland” and many stereotypical conservatives on “the Coasts”.
5. Most states are purple, not blue or read. Certain areas of California and New York are as “hillbilly” and “racist” as “the South”, and certain areas of “the Heartland” are as much “liberal bubbles” as NYC.
6. Leaving aside individual differences and similarities and broad existence of nativism and parochialism of many liberals (including on the Coasts).
7. Like much tradition non-western anthropology, contemporary non-Coastal safaris are essentialist and ethnocentric.
8. These studies strengthen othering of “the natives” and cliches about academics and liberals (many of whom are well aware of attitudes and motives of “the other”).
9. Most add little to nothing to studies from decades ago, into Middle American Radicals or decades of research on European far right.
10. They mainly seem to serve to give some liberal street cred over other liberals in their own liberal bubble. #TheEnd
