I am becoming convinced that autonomous vehicles are designed to solve the problem of "I live in a wealthy suburb but have a horrible car commute and don't want to drive anymore but also hate trains and buses."
Seems like I'm not alone. "If these three revolutions do not happen concurrently, pollution and traffic are expected to get worse with driverless cars." washingtonpost.com/sf/brand-conne…
I have yet to see a single AV booster advocate for banning car ownership, or show up at a city hearing to remove street parking and return pavement to other uses.
In fact, last week a prominent AV investor told me that he has every intention of owning an AV and expects others to do the same. So I'm not just whiffing here.
Unless something changes, I think there's a real risk that AVs become a weapon wealthy suburban residents use to prevent cities from banning private cars.
If you've watched cities evolve over any period of time, it becomes apparent that wealthy suburbs have disproportionate and undemocratic influence on urban policy.
So, are they going to finally show up and join us in the push for the kind of city they say will be made possible with AVs? They haven't showed up yet.
"Trust, but verify." Well, I don't trust the suburbs one bit. So it's going to have to be 100% verification for me.
