/n I believe it is arguable that identity is in the mind. We have absolutely no idea to what extent our biology and our life experience influences our identity. It is pretty much a philosophical argument and as such is highly subjective. How can someone who is biologically male
/n ...know that he is actually a woman? I do not doubt that trans women believe that they are actual women but, at the end of the day, that's what it is, a belief and to legislate for that belief, to me, is dangerous. You may as well legislate for the existence of God...
/n ...You cannot rely on people just saying they are the opposite sex and then expect everyone to believe it. What if they're not sure? What if they're not serious? I will give you two examples. The first is @grrlalex have a look at this interview of Alex..
Tell me, are they serious? Are they joking? Who knows? Only Alex does. It is entirely possible they are not serious. But I would have to treat them as a woman even if I thought they weren't serious. I will now give you another example from personal experience.
/n ...I was teaching a course in filmmaking to young people, along with 2 other male filmmakers. One of the students, a girl I will call Jill, had come up with a story about an actress who experienced sexism and misogyny at the hands of casting directors...
/n ...(it was around the time of #metoo and the Weinstein thing). It was an absolutely fantastic idea which focussed on a character who had decided to take a stand against misogyny and call it out and I, as a woman, was very moved by the story...
/n ..So the students began developing it. Now, one of the other students on the course was a young person who I will call Trish. Trish was a young man who, I was told, identified as a woman. Trish made no attempt to look like a woman. The only concession Trish had made to...
/n ...being a woman was to call themselves Trish and we all respected their wishes by calling them by that name. The students began developing Jill's idea and Trish, who had a far more forceful personality than Jill began turning an idea about sexism and misogyny into...
/n ...something very different indeed. The female character stopped having any agency and simply became a victim of the abuse. And, thanks to Trish and the 2 other male filmmakers the abuse was ramped up (in a giggling and immature way) and the more fun they had imagining...
/n ...the type of abuse the character experienced, the more upset Jill and I became. I couldn't quite believe I was witnessing something so sexist happening before my eyes. A timely and important story about misogyny was being yanked away and mutated into a story that..
/n ...was misogynistic. So I called it out. I took the 2 male filmmakers aside and explained why I thought this was wrong. And I was immediately told that I was wrong because Trish was a woman and therefore it was a woman's story. And I realised in that moment...
/13 ...that something profoundly unsettling had happened. Something that has enormous consequences for women.
