1/ Today, President Trump is expected to end America’s involvement in the Iran nuclear deal — and potentially threaten its existence.

It will be one of the most consequential decisions of his presidency.
2/ To understand why this is such a big deal, it helps to start with the basics. What exactly is the #IranDeal?
3/ It’s formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. It stops Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. bit.ly/2FUDPnS
4/ In July 2015, the US, the UK, France, Russia, China, Germany, and the EU agreed to lift sanctions on Iran, giving it greater access to the global economy.

In return, Iran agreed to take concrete steps to curb its nuclear program. bit.ly/2rtbeS6
5/ Here’s an example:

Iran had about 20,000 centrifuges. The deal says it can keep around 5,000 of them, and they must be mostly the oldest, least useful ones. That makes it harder to create a bomb.
6/ Iran also gave up 97% of its enriched uranium, and its leftover stockpile can only be at about 3.67% enrichment. (Uranium used in nuclear bombs must be at 90%).

It also allows inspections of nuclear facilities.
7/ So what does that all mean?

Before the deal, Iran could likely make a nuclear bomb within two or three months if it wanted to.

After the deal, it would take Iran about a year to make that weapon.
8/ (There was nothing in the deal that said Iran couldn’t do other nefarious things, like test missiles, sponsor terrorist groups, or crack down on human rights).
9/ Still, there’s controversy: The restrictions on Iran’s centrifuges disappear after 10 years, and the limits on uranium enrichment go away five years after that.
10/ Trump has called it “the worst deal ever.” His European allies have tried to convince him to stay in, promising to improve the agreement.

He’ll make an official announcement with his decision at 2pm. bit.ly/2rtEjMu
