Let’s not forget that online comments that have caused such outrage were provoked by shocking scenes of masked Garda evicting activists who were highlighting the chronic Housing crisis across the capital & country.
The Minister is correct. We do depend on the Garda to protect our communities. & right now our communities are being destroyed by property speculation & development that actively harms Irish citizens.
The Garda were defending property developers against citizens on Fredrick St.
In 2002 at an RTS in Dublin, had started on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay, and was finishing to by going on a parade. The event wasn’t legal and by the time the protest hit Dame St, some Garda clearly had had enough, and
They came into the crowd and used indiscriminate force. At one point a Garda grabbed my camera, and ripped the battery from it. Thankfully, I had a spare and other people were filming...
There was a very small MSM presence & as this happened at the end of the day few remained.
So I hadn't planned on doing another #repealedthe8th/@repeal_shield thread quite so soon. But I'm getting concerned/annoyed by attempts in some quarters to downplay just how nasty & toxic SM was for #repealthe8th activists. So I'm going to talk about that abuse for a moment.
On May 17th @becksk wrote a tweet expressing her feelings about the #8thref & abortion in Ireland, just like thousands of other Irish Women have.
It was eloquent, concise & powerful, & many people agreed, it got 33k likes & 16k retweets, it clearly made an impression. I've talked before about how women sharing their stories about Abortion are a powerful weapon for Pro Choice activists. And Anti choicers know & hate that.
Alot of people are drawing comparisons between trump win the brexit referendum & #repealedthe8th. I think there are important takeaways from the campaign for other groups moving forward, but we should remember, that this referendum was a long time coming.
Speaking personally the 8th was a factor in my political life since my early teens. I remember spotting @taraobrien1 marching against the referendum in '93. This ref was the culmination of a campaign that kicked into gear with the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar 5 yrs ago
Some background on Dowson 1st. He was kicked out of the Orange Order in the 90s for being too extreme and was both heavily involved in both the BNP, and the loyalist flag riots in Belfast in 2010/11. He has several criminal convictions,
Aside from the aforementioned protest at the Mary Stopes Clinic in Belfast, were he was working with Youth Defence (who are behind the savethe8thinfo facebook page, Dowson has ties to Belfast Anti Choice activist Bernadette Smyth running the Scottish Chapter of "Precious Life"
I love Ireland. We're the only country who find out about a new potential homegrown terrorist threat, and instead of a "FOX NEWS ALERT" everyone's immediate reaction is; "Fuck's sake lads lilac gloves?"
Presumably, their first mission will be a trip to Ikea to buy a working folding table.
Oh great, thanks a bunch Bill, now the birth of my son is the 3rd greatest moment of my life...
