MASONRY WALL CRACKS

Due to its negligible flexural strength and lack of ductility, masonry walls are highly susceptible to cracking, if not properly designed. The foundation or supporting system plays the most critical role ensuring the service life of masonry structures. CAUSES of MASONRY WALL CRACKS

1. Subsidence

This is typically the downward movement of the ground and is not connected to the weight or load of the building and will occur irrespective of whether there is a building there or not.

DIAGONALS IN CONSTRUCTION

The Diagonal Rule is very important in construction. A diagonal is the line that connects opposite corners of sq/rectangle that are otherwise separated by another point. In geometry, lines continue forever in both directions because of a diagonal line. Image If you don't get it right at setting out then expect a lot of things to go wrong with your project. Check diagonals if you've used a square & ensure the building starting point is square, setting out should be done on the 3,4,5 principle on one corner & the rest set from there.

REBAR CONGESTION🙎

Occurs when steel bars used to reinforce structural members are closely spaced especially at lapping joints. It leads to many problems especially during placement & compaction of concrete. If not taken care of may affect the structural integrity of a building. Image HOW TO AVOID REBAR CONGESTION

1. Provide enough space between steel bars for pouring concrete into the forms according to the building code requirements.

TRIMMER BARS REINFORCEMENT

As you can see the beam-like bars around the edges of the slab opening below, it helps mitigate cracking and also prevents cracks opening far enough that they would become a problem by stopping them from propagating further into the slab. ImageImage It can be placed in diagonal or straight but also must be installed near the surface of the slab as that is where control of the cracks is most important. However again, it is best practice to support the trimming reinforcement using spacers and cast the concrete around it.

REINFORCED BRICK SLAB

An RB slab is erected with steel bars reinforcement and arranged bricks within the spacings. Steel bars are arranged with some distances based on the structural design determined by how load of the slab is distributed & the desired shape of the final slab. CONSTRUCTION LIABILITY

A construction project is basically a game of liabilities between all the concerned parties; contractors, professional consultants & the developer. In the event of an unfortunate outcome, the consequent damages should be settled by the responsible party. Image A thoughtful way of safeguarding your project therefore, is simply engaging licensed contractors and consultants. I admit that this option might seem costly at first but thankfully, licensed parties are typically insured against possible liabilities. And that includes...
