Skeletal muscle relaxants (SMRs) come in two flavors - antispasmodics & antispastics

We saw antispasmodics treat pain & spasm with varied side effects

Antispastics appear to be tolerable & effective, but sometimes oral meds aren't enough🧵

Learning Objectives:

✅Review spasticity

✅Outline the antispastic SMRs

✅Characterize Baclofen withdrawal/toxicity

✅Introduce intrathecal Baclofen pumps (ITBPs) as a last-line spasticity Rx

✅Explore a major ITBP trial

View this SMR🧵 first👇:

Ever have a patient with pain refractory to Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen?

Did you reach for a skeletal muscle relaxant (SMR)?

If so why that one? was there a better choice?

Apparently there's no good answer🧵

Learning Outcomes:

✅Review muscle tone

✅Categorize the two different classes of SMRs and

✅Outline why this difference is important

✅Briefly introduce safety data regarding specific SMRs

✅Identify gaps in the SMR evidence-base

❓How are spasm & spasticity related?

Why do some pts w/ #COVID19 get sick & stay sick after their acute infection has resolved?

What exactly is #LongCOVID, "post-acute COVID19" or "chronic COVID19 syndrome" (whatever we call it)?

Learn what's known about this complex, poorly understood condition: A thread (1/15) (2/15) First, a review:

🦠#COVID19 is a non-segmented, enveloped, (+)-sense virus
🦠Named "SARS-CoV-2" (like the SARS-CoV-1 virus from 2003)
🦠Illness it causes is #COVID19 infection
🦠Binds to ACE-2 receptors
🦠Causes a spectrum of disease w/ variable presentation & LT-sequelae
